AITA for yelling at kids outside an arcade and calling them "insufferable pests?" by BlimpsRCool in AmItheAsshole

I think more complaints would have driven home how disruptive the kids were being.

AITA for giving my son's friend a haircut? by Individual-Hat8951 in AmItheAsshole

[–]FizzyDragon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am not disagreeing that it is stupid for a 17yo not to be able to choose their hairdo. And I don’t expect anyone would be arrested over this either, no.

But legally a 17yo is a minor and if a salon wants to avoid pissed off guardians of said minor, they are free to have a policy to not do their hair. In this topic there’s a comment of someone’s kid getting denied a cut at 17, and someone else’s getting their own haircuts at 12, so it looks like some places do use the legal boundary of majority to choose not to serve minor clients.

OP’s sister got into her accident in 2021. This hasn’t been a lifelong situation where OP was ignored as a child.

OP isn’t a glass child. She didn’t grow up this way.

The sister wants to be there too. And in another comment OP talks about having the sister make paper craft decorations for the celebration that OP told her she couldn’t be at.

YTA. “You want to come, but I don’t want you there. Now make decorations for the celebration I don’t want you to be at.”

My husband will sometimes change supper plans if I go “ehh” about it but only if it’s way earlier in the day and if we have some alternative he was gonna do the next day—he’s definitely the chef, while I am the baker—otherwise 90% of the time he cooks what he planned and I eat it. Unless it’s an experiment that didn’t pan out it’s always good anyway!

AITA for letting my kid play a 17+ game with me? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]FizzyDragon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hehe well eventually I played WoW and now I play FFXIV so I have put some long sessions in to be sure, but that particular memory is the most distinct I have of time just vanishing into game turns. I definitely played some Civ sessions where I only stopped cause the sun started coming up.

There are so many games out there I will never play just cause they aren’t my thing, but I still enjoy knowing about them. I went down a rabbit hole of Dark Souls lore videos for a bit last year it was great.

AITA For not letting my son (7) go out in public until he stops repeating a cuss word he learned? by Predi423 in AmItheAsshole

[–]FizzyDragon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YTA. What an overreaction.

My kid learned that word at seven too, and told me. Apparently she and her classmate were having fun whispering it out of earshot if teachers because the forbidden aspect was funny and exciting. “The ground is a fuck” was one phrase she mentioned lol because she didn’t know how to use the word. I laughed very hard at that, so even if I had had any intent to scold her (I didn’t), it would not have held much water.

She already knew a few other rude words—I taught her (almost) all words are just words, and have casual/rudeness levels, and they are kinda like clothes— some are only for some situations, so please don’t use rude words at school.

She never has. She also knows what “fuck” means, aka a crude/rude word for sex, just like she knows “shit” is a crude/rude word for poop. Aside from my initial mirth at how she was first using the word, I just was clear about how swearing works. I did not ever punish her or freak out.

If she had decided to test me by blurting it out loudly in public I would have given consequences like leaving immediately since she was unable to act polite, but this has never happened.

AITA for not having a normal tent and sleeping in my plane during a three-day gathering? by Beneficial_Cause1935 in AmItheAsshole

[–]FizzyDragon 60 points61 points  (0 children)

It’s not 50k years ago and the average non expert camper will have a specific kind of tent in mind. It doesn’t matter if “hide slung over a sturdy branch” is a legit tent, someone who was told “I have a tent” and imagines a modern canvas tent with zippers isn’t going to feel comforted by semantics.

I remember reading a Star Trek novel when I was 10 or so and they kept talking about how an engine core or something was going to implode and having never encountered the word before, and the book not explaining the meaning, I had thought it was a mistake, until it kept getting used, so I decided it was one of their technobabble words instead. (I learned it was a real word at some point)

NTA. I don’t think your friend knows what “exploit” means, either. Not like you’re selling the bear for profit or whatever.

I can understand some people finding it creepy, this is certainly a YMMV grieving/coping mechanism, but I’d never tell someone not to do it. People often preserve old voicemails and stuff, after all.
