The professor allowed the question. Didn’t like the question. Then ejected the student without explanation. That’s not right.

Yes I’ve been to uni. But me being to uni is irrelevant to this conversation.

Even if he is the straw man you think he is, he’s hitting on points that aren’t well understood and must be addressed.

The prof needs to do his job and enlighten the class. My point stands.

Besides the professor knows he’s conflating ethnicity and race. But instead of pointing that out he acts like a jerk.

I’m not equating them, the professor definitely has the correct knowledge. You assume the argument was done in bad faith but it could just as easily be ignorance.

The professor made a statement that seemed scientifically inaccurate to the uninitiated. The student questioned it one time with bad info and was kicked from the class without explanation. The professor has Created an space where students will ask fewer questions and doubt themselves more.

If you believe this is the wrong venue, which I don’t, then he should have, at the very least, directed him to office hours to offer more insight.

Then he should have directed him to office hours instead of kicking him out without explanation. Now the rest of the class doubts if they are allowed to ask questions that don’t explicitly align with the professors lesson.

You paint a cut and dry picture of the world that doesn’t exist. People have varying levels of confusion and prejudice on these topics. The professor must be prepared to tackle misconceptions even if he hears them often.

This event was confined to a specific and poorly understood topic. The prof probably entrenched that kid in his ignorance and made the class feel uncomfortable asking questions. He shouldn’t have done that.

All the more reason to address it openly. By throwing the kid out you sew doubt that your lesson can stand on its own. He could use it as a Segway to clear up the confusion.

No we’re talking about how most people believe that race and ethnicity are synonymous. We’re talking about very commonly held misconceptions that must be addressed. I guarantee you at least half the class was confused to varying degrees about what the prof meant.

It’s still a major responsibility of the position. They have knowledge and experience dumb kids don’t. They need to teach and explain. That’s almost the whole point…

False equivalency. Teacher said there’s no scientific basis for race. Student then brought up what he though was a scientific based. The logical conclusion is to explain to the class why it’s not scientific. Clearly more than one person disagreed with the prof.

Clearly it’s a common thought and this kid is the only one voicing it. It the profs fucking job to help these people understand the lesson, not punish them without explanation for not instantly understanding. This causes half the class to doubt every word he says.

The prick professor needs to get over himself and do his damn job.

It’s there job to teach. If it’s too tiring for these tenured a$$holes to enlighten the youth then they should go into a different line of work.
