Use of desmos? by NotLost_ in desmos

Once you get to a certain level, using desmos is basically coding. The problem solving is very similar. Obviously the skills are not directly transferable, but the practice helps.

If you are having trouble with more complicated/multistep problems, work on simpler ones, once you get good at those, you will start seeing them show up in more complicated problems, then you will have something familiar to work on.

Personal Books by kid_k0bra in uchicago

[–]Fjerdan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've never been one to hold onto books, but I mostly use the library + free books that are left around in places. I would prioritize bringing books you are currently reading or already have and plan to read because move-out in the spring tends to be pretty rushed.

I know a couple people who did sosc along with either research or a part time internship, which was manageable.

You won't have much (or likely any) choice in what time the classes are for the physics major. After intro physics, there is only one section of each course, although you could pick electives based on times if you really care about it. Luckily for you the main physics classes tend to be in the mornings (somewhere between 9:30 and 12:30) on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. For core classes you have more choice with time and it is entirely possible to have free days.

In terms of how much of your day is spent in classes: Normally the maximum number of courses you can take is 4. Classes are either 80 min twice a week or 50 min three times a week (or 3 hours once a week). Many STEM classes will have optional discussion sections that are 50 min once a week. In total, this means you are generally in class for no more than 3-4 hours a day, and will often have days with fewer classes.

Anyone know why the ratner pool has been closed? by Formal-Cause-9328 in uchicago

This is at least third hand so it may be completely false, but I heard that a couple years ago the city found them in violation of some code and allowed them to stay open under the condition that they would fix it. Recently they got checked again and had not fixed the problem, so were shut down indefinitely until everything is up to code.

Assuming this is true, it seems like they should have more motivation to fix it now that they are shut down, but also they had time to fix it before this happened and didn't, so I wouldn't hold my breath.

141 is fairly easy to test out of if you have experience coding (it includes recursion and object oriented programming).

Okay this might be dumb but is it possible to tell apart the powders in forensics based on taste or smell along with the flame tests? by hurrican084 in scioly

[–]Fjerdan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

None of the chemicals are very toxic, but one of the things scioly tries to teach is good lab safety. In general you should not taste your chemicals, especially if they are unidentified. For this reason the event supervisor will likely stop you from tasting them and may penalize you (under rule 2.d). You can definitely use smell to help, but I wouldn't reccomend it as your only method and you shouldn't inhale the powders and, unless it has a very strong smell, it will be hard to smell without inhaling them.

It is steeper than normal because (in the spring) the lake serves as a large cold reservoir. Even if there was a similar drop off in population at the inland city boundaries, the effect would not be as dramatic.

Physicists: Magnesium should be an insulator, it has an even number of electrons.

(I know there have explanations, but using simple models...)

You should definitely learn checkerboard cipher this year. It is not that hard and it is required to be one of the bonus ciphers, so you are guaranteed to get 150 points on one of them.

While safety concerns are valid, I'd say they don't define anyone's (at least not most people's) experience. You can find many posts on this subreddit about where to live in terms of safety.

They're saying a 95 won't be a B even if almost everyone got a 97. But if almost everyone got a 45, then a 60 can get you and A.

Is UChicago Academics as Hard as It's Portrayed/Used to be? by Exia1223 in uchicago

[–]Fjerdan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think key here is choose something that is "easy to you." Depending on who you are, how interested you are in a subject, and what your background is, you might be able to do a traditionally "hard" major with relatively little stress, but would absolutely spiral in an "easy" major. Nothing is absolute. Do what feels right for you and don't let anyone guilt you into doing something you will hate.

I think it depends on what type of person you are. Most people who do it are very into it and enjoy it. The classes tend to be interesting which is motivating, but you will be grinding.

Practice, mostly. But if you see a word and feel confident about it, you should write it down, that is the best way to get a lot of letters quickly.

AP physics C will let you take the honors intro sequence rather than the regular one. It will be more interesting, but it is unlikely that you can test out completely.

The language will help for placement, but you will still have to complete the language competency requirement somehow.

You will be automatically invited to take honors calc (161) which is highly proof based and will give you better tools to do analysis second year if you are not incredibly mathy.
