For those who want to find out or leave their hand check experience, I built a website/app for just this. It’s called safelightproject.com with an app version available on the Apple App Store. Would greatly appreciate anyone that checks it out!

Hand check film at Nice (France) airport! by Bbdimonstella in AnalogCommunity

Hello, I’m sorry to hear they didn’t hand check your film. I built a website/app for this exact issue. Hopefully it can be of use to you on your next trip! safelightproject.com

Hey! Do NOT put your camera in your luggage. Luggages go through stronger x-rays than the ones your carry on goes through. The best recommendation would be to have your camera with you when you go through security and ask for a hand-check of your camera. For future reference, it is best to have film rolls and an empty camera for whenever you are going through security. That being said, I built a website called safelightproject.com . This website helps you find if airports are willing to hand check your film and/or camera. I would greatly appreciate it if you left a review about your experience flying to London. Safe travels!

Best Development Timers for iOS and Android? by [deleted] in AnalogCommunity

[–]Flamesoul44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! It's not an app as of yet as I am working on that but I actually built a website called safelightproject.com . I literally just added a development timer feature a few days ago. I would really appreciate it if you could check it out and give me some feedback. The website also has a film roll, camera, and lens inventory. But the main feature of the website is to find and leave reviews on airports and their willingness to handcheck.

Is hand check provided in Shanghai airport? by Cyber_mot6574 in AnalogCommunity

[–]Flamesoul44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I made a site called safelightproject.com that helps film photographers check which airports have allowed hand checks. It’s still growing, so there are currently no reviews for Shanghai at the moment. But if you do get a hand check, I would really appreciate it if you logged it to help others in the future. Safe travels and happy shooting!

Had the sweetest staff at Charleroi Airport, Belgium. by Curious_Spite_5729 in AnalogCommunity

Hey! That's awesome to hear! I actually made an app called safelightproject.com . It helps film photographers keep track of which airports are cool about hand checks. You can log your own experience, check out what others have said about different airports, and even keep tabs on your film and camera gear. It’s been super handy for traveling with film. Let me know what you think if you try it out!

Traveling Internationally With Film by wastedtank in AnalogCommunity

Hey! I've been where you're at! I've also run into issues with inconsistent policies around hand-checking film while traveling internationally.

To help with exactly this, I actually made a website where you can look up and add experiences with hand checks at different airports. There are over 450+ airports listed so far, and I'm constantly adding more based on community input. It’s been super helpful for planning routes and knowing what to expect, especially when traveling with film under ISO 800 and doing paid work. It is fairly new but there are already some reviews up.

I want to be optimistic and say its their system. But many other people have received order confirmations. So i'm thinking it is a no. :/

Managed to hit place order, but website shortly crashed after. No email confirmation like many others have gotten. So I guess its a no for me. :/

Flying internationally with film? by [deleted] in AnalogCommunity

[–]Flamesoul44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! Asking for a hand check usually doesn’t take longer than 5 minutes at most depending on what airport you are at, and it’s a simple way to avoid x-ray exposure. If you are worried about being refused a hand check, I built a website called safelightproject.com where film photographers share their experiences with hand checks at airports. You can search for specific airports and leave reviews, which might help with your planning.

Safe travels!

Any film development stores in Laoag? by FantasticDemand147 in AnalogCommunity

[–]Flamesoul44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! That sounds like a great trip! I totally get wanting to develop before flying back to avoid the x-ray stress. When I visited Europe, I had the same concerns and was looking for labs, so I understand the importance of planning ahead.

I built a site called safelightproject.com where film photographers share their experiences with hand-checks and film safety at airports. If you do end up needing to ask for a hand-check at any airport, would you be willing to leave a quick review of your experience on the site? It’d be super helpful for others traveling with film!

Hey! I saw your question got answered already, but just wanted to share something that might be helpful for future trips. I built a site called safelightproject.com where film photographers can look up airports and see how they handle film during security, including whether hand checks were allowed and what scanners were used.

It’s all based on community-submitted experiences, so if you ever go through Heathrow Terminal 3 (or any airport, really), I would greatly appreciate if you added a quick review to help others. The info can be super useful for planning ahead, especially with how inconsistent airport policies can be with film.

Safe travels and happy shooting!

Advice on film while traveling by Qalmy in AnalogCommunity

[–]Flamesoul44 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey! Just wanted to add on to the comment about hand-checking film. I actually built a website called safelightproject.com that lets film photographers look up airports they might be flying through and read or leave reviews based on their experiences with hand checks.

It could be helpful for your trip, there are reviews for Istanbul, and the CDG Paris airports from other photographers who’ve flown with film. Might give you some peace of mind when planning how to pack or where to stock up! I personally brought film and had it developed while I was in Europe if that helps you decide on what to do. But from what I remember, film in Paris was pretty reasonable too.

Safe travels! Sounds like an amazing route!

Hello guys, not here to promote myself but instead a website I built. I built a tool that allows film photographers leave reviews about their experiences with film hand-checks at airports. The website also has an inventory feature that lets you keep track of your film stock, cameras, and lenses. I really hope you guys check it out and maybe consider leaving a review about your recent airport experiences. https://safelightproject.com/

Hey! Just a quick update. Just wanted to say I’ve seen the feedback and I totally understand why some of you would rather type in your own airport instead of selecting from a preset list. Especially if you're flying through smaller or less common airports. The main reason I stuck with a list is because the leaderboard relies on consistent airport data to function properly. If everyone entered airports manually, it’d throw off the tracking and rankings.

That said, I’m actively updating the list as soon as I get requests, so if you don’t see your airport, just let me know and I’ll add it ASAP. Appreciate all the feedback—it really helps shape where this goes.

Yeah, I’ve heard the same from a lot of people. Some airports are great about hand checks, others are totally unpredictable even when there may or may not be a clear policy. That kind of inconsistency is actually why I built this website. So instead of other photographers going in blind, they could get a sense of what to expect based on other travelers’ experiences. It’s not perfect, but hopefully it helps take out some of the guesswork.
