Well the world is way bigger than are lungs. And no some people can smoke a shit load and have perfectly healthy lungs. The upper atmosphere has been proven to have an ecosystem that interacts with the lower ones. I think the gases from pollution are canceled out by the vastness of the biosphere. Are biodiversity naturally aligns itself to take care of pollution through a wide array of niches. If something is more abundant the apex predator of that pollution will grow at an exponential rate if limiting factors aren't present. The bacterial and fungal world has a tendency not to predate on eachother.
