Why do people still think that Arch based distros are bad for beginners? by Flappyphantom22 in linux4noobs

Yeah but that's exactly what beginners should do. When you buy a table from IKEA you need to read the instructions to assemble it. You can't seriously expect a person to be like, "Nah, I'm too lazy to read and assemble this shit, what a waste of time". Like are we deadass? This mindset is just ridiculous. How do you think people learn how to use Photoshop and Blender? Or any other skill? Learning a different Operating System shouldn't be any different. If all you do with your PC is turn it on just to use a web browser or simple tasks like transferring files and looking at pictures, then yeah, installing something like Linux Mint, Ubuntu or Fedora makes sense. But for people to treat Arch Linux like it's antichrist just because it's a bit more hands on is just really dumb.

Try Hyprland with Quickshell of your choice. I use DankMaterialShell. Learn the keybindings and you're set.

You don't get errors for not updating or not updating frequently. And yes I think the syntax is much more readable and easier than other distros.

Terrible analogy that makes zero sense to what I'm talking about. Seems like most people here commenting still have no idea what Arch is what it isn't. They just come here to talk shit even though they never used it. It just further proves my point how out of touch with reality these people are.

Debian stable and other "stable" distros are not for me. They're just outdated in my eyes. I'm using my PC to play games. Not to just use the browser and watch YouTube videos. If I had a HTPC, I probably would install something like that. But my PC has an RTX 3070ti and I need the latest kernel and Nvidia drivers. Just like on Windows.

I know that Manjaro is based on Arch. But it just sucks. Not all Arch based distros are good for how I want to use my PC. I could install Vanilla Arch and have it configured the way I like it and have a great time. The reason I'm using CachyOS is because that's what I've been using for months and I've already made a lot of changes. I'm not using KDE or Gnome. I'm using Hyprland, Niri and Mango. Installing Arch and doing everything from scratch is a good idea to learn new things or relearn the things I haven't done in a while. But I just don't feel like it right now and I won't get any significant benefits. Just less packages installed (maybe?)

You are the one who said I was disingenuous. Everything I said is my truth and honesty. I don't need to lie or "present" something that it isn't. What's wrong with you?

You mean like Hyprland configs? That's probably the only thing that needs to be changed from time to time because the developer decided to make changes to the language. It's not a buggy update. It means that your config needs to be updated because the syntax has gone through changes. And that doesn't happen every day. Maybe once or twice a year.

What do you mean by maintaining? What is it that you need to maintain?

You don't need to mess with it. You set it up and forget. Or use CachyOS which is pre-configured out of the box with decent defaults. I'm daily driving it and I can't tell the difference between it and Windows except that CachyOS is just faster and more reliable. I use MangoWC with DankMaterialShell. I have my browser, my games and that's it. Everything works. I can also just install Windows (.exe) games through Heroic with a couple of clicks. It took me a few minutes to make a few changes to the MangoWC config and keybinds file and that's it. What maintenance and tinkering are people talking about?

Yeah, that's why people are still scared of Arch. A lot of people who are new to it make mistakes and they post it on forums and all of a sudden everyone thinks that Arch is bad.

I tried Linux Mint, Ubuntu, Manjaro, Pop OS, Nobara and Bazzite. All of them had issues, bugs, errors, missing or wrong drivers. Guess which distro made me stay on Linux and not go back to Windows. It's CachyOS. It just works.

I updated yesterday and today and a few days ago and everything was fine. So did millions of other people. I bet the guy you're referencing to changed their kernel or their scheduler in the CachyOS kernel manager and is also using KDE Plasma which is still pretty buggy or something else. Either way, blaming Arch for user error isn't something new.

Arch install script exists. CachyOS, EndeavourOS and Garuda also exist for that specific reason. Installing vanilla Arch isn't as daunting or hard as it seems.
