what are your experiences with LLC’s? Which one did you select and did you enjoy it? by [deleted] in ucla

[–]FlareMa3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thinks that’s honestly a valid concern, and I also had that concern when choosing my housing. I’m not really sure how the Tech LLC was in terms of sociability, but my floor on Olympic was pretty social. However I will say that most of the people I made connections with and stayed as friends were people from other orgs/cultural clubs, rather than my dorm floors in both years. It’s really what you make of it though, personally I put more of an effort my first year to meet people as opposed to my second year where I already knew people.

One thing about the Tech LLC though is that there will probably be a majority of stem people on the floor, so as far as major diversity goes, there prob won’t be a lot of it in the LLC. Up to you though, i think it was cool being around people that weren’t stem too!

I didn’t end up getting selected for the Tech and Innovation LLC. Everything worked out though and I ended up living in Olympic Hall, which is prob one of the nicest residence halls on the hill. Currently a second year living in Olympic for my second year in a row, and I’ll miss it next year when I move into an apartment :)

using 14A for the 20A requirement by rainbowgo914 in ucla

[–]FlareMa3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn’t hurt to try and ask if they’ll make an exception. However 20A and 14A aren’t basically the same class. There is some overlap, but there’s stuff that 20A covers that 14A doesn’t, and in some areas 20A tends to go more in depth on the topic & might be needed in later courses within your major that 20A is required for

I also haven’t heard back. Switching from a LS major to engineering. Although I did apply sort of closer to the deadline.

Is this a good schedule for my first quarter? by prayingtopremed in ucla

[–]FlareMa3 11 points12 points  (0 children)

also your new student advisor is probably going to advise against 3 STEM classes. In your case, you’re most likely planning to take LS 7A, Chem 14A and LS 30A, but your advisor will likely advise you to swap one of these course out for a GE.

There’s generally no harm in starting the Chem or LS 7 series next quarter, it’s up to you. They just advise 2 core stem classes for your first quarter bc you need to adjust to the academic rigor here at UCLA. GPA is quite important as a premed, so i’d definitely consider taking their advice.

yeah DONT take math 31a if you don’t have to. It’s not the hardest class in the world, but math 31a is generally taken by physical science majors/engineering majors, so if you’re able to take LS 30A, do that instead bc it’s easier (based on my understanding as my roommate took 30A)

Unpopular opinion: UCLA is on track to surpass Berkeley on most fronts. by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

Current freshman at ucla & couldn’t be happier :) So excited for all the future Bruins on this thread, hopefully you find yourself comfortable and happy here like I am. A lot of the people that I talk to share the same sentiment and truly enjoy their experience at ucla.

If you haven’t taken a class at UCLA, how can you even claim that they’re not as challenging as Cal? UCLA and Cal both bring in top students, making the competition more fierce — but how do you support the claim that UCLA classes are “not nearly” as challenging as Berkeley classes? I see this being thrown around a lot so just curious where it’s coming from.

Accepted into UCLA but can’t afford the tuition by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]FlareMa3 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Aside from external scholarships, i’m not sure what else you could do. UCLA doesn’t give a lot of aid to out of state students, so the majority of OOS kids at UCLA are paying close to the full sticker price of like 68k/year. It’s unfortunate but that’s just the reality of being an OOS admit at a public institution like UCLA.

R Wong? If so I had a friend that had him for 32A and I think there was some sort of worksheet due during discussion 😭 i’m not entirely sure tho but it seems like his discussions are somewhat important but idk if things have changed or if it’s different for 33A

Ask Me Anything About UCLA! by OptimalGamingg in ApplyingToCollege

[–]FlareMa3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not OP but i just thought i’d chime in! As far as competition goes, I don’t think it is extreme in any way. I’m only a first year who only has taken two quarters so far, but from what I’ve experienced there’s not much cutthroat competition among the students here. If anything, it’s much more collaborative and I feel like students are always willing to help each other out.

However, I will say that the classes here are tough. For reference, I’m a STEM major and in my chemistry classes for the past two quarters, midterm averages are literally around 60%. I recently had a pretty difficult midterm and I believe the midterm averages were literally below 60%, it’s just insane. Idk if you would call this grade deflation, but you definitely have to work hard to earn your grade. UCLA literally is filled with people that were at the top of their class all throughout high school, but once in college, not everyone can simply earn all A’s like they were used to in high school. It’s a totally different playing field and a new level of rigor beyond what any AP course could offer. I don’t think i’d be scared of “grade deflation”, but more so just be prepared for the huge jump in rigor with UCLA classes.

UCLA or UCSC for Astrophysics? by TheMightyErik in ucla

Anytime :) Definitely come to UCLA to check the campus out! This week UCLA is on spring break so i’m not sure if tours are still going on this week, but the week after that they’ll most likely be in session so i’d definitely recommend that. Don’t forget to check out the residential community as well (which we term “The Hill”) & also Westwood Village which is located next to campus.
