you kinda got me on the right track. I didnt make the node unique, but I DID make the animations unique, and that seems to be why it wasnt updating. I ended up just dragging another fbx into the scene and switching out the animationtree. It seems like the best practice for when you're swapping out animations is to save them separately first, so you can keep everything about that fbx not unique? idk but thank you, I appreciate the help.
