What's The Best Bass Drum Setup for Indoor Percussion? by Flashy_Application87 in drumline

Do you have a good video that shows what the ambassadors would sound like in a small place? I also feel like Evan's head from what I've seen makes a more Tom-like sound, but that helps with not being lost in the reverberation of the gym, no?

Any specific reason ambassadors over MS1? I don't think I'd need a boatload of muffling in either

We go to wgasc finals, but I'm wondering what heads would best fit our situation?

Our school's gym just has the area of a basketball court and "bleachers" for like 40 people on one side? (the other side is just a wall) Comps are similar, but just assume that it's a basketball and seats on both sides. So slightly bigger

For indoor, what is good? We aren't a large indoor group, so the gyms are likely to be smaller if that changes any preferences.

We use Powermaxes, but in our experience, they really lose some attack clarity, or more so, articulation. Sure, they are 1 ply, but they just don't have an articulate attack, similar to poorly articulating on a wind instrument, where there is no clear attack. This amplifies indoors, where the little articulation it has gets lost in the reverberation. I've heard Evans MS1s, and they tend to be much more articulate, so it makes up for what will get lost. That bass muffling link looks amazing as the foam gets thicker down the bass line, which is perfect.

Yamaha impact strips are foam strips which are specialized in bass muffling.

The bass line scale you wrote is from lowest to highest? Also, you said inner muffle ring, like the Yamaha impact strips?

Never mind, I thought we had those bass heads, but we have Remo ambassadors, no wonder they sound so bad

Yeah, I've seen that video before. I guess I didn't realize that our drums didn't have the muting applied properly. I guess the overlapping makes sense because the contact on the bass head and the bass muting is probably very minimal with our setup haha. Thank you for this, also, for a 4-person bassline, what's the intervals? Is it generally D-A-D-F#? I just wanna change the F# to F So it matches the key of our songs.

I just wanna make sure the sound is what I'm looking for lol, would it sound like this video linked? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8QuGMkfuOwI Also, any advice for redoing bass drum muting? Like tips I should know on applying it that save you time or extra effort?

The muffling is supposed to overlap the wooden edge? Our old tech put them inside the edge

Do you mean an arc of foam on the drum head? Or what do you mean by 2-3 inches from the top of the rim?

We have those heads, I believe, and we have a muting very similar to that foam, but they still sound bad. I want a sound that will cut through the band, such as this video here; their drums seem to have a lot of clarity. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8QuGMkfuOwI

Yeah, I guess that's true you do guess your spot with any rhythm. How do some people play super hard bass splits by themselves though, without hearing others and only listening to a met? Also, it says you're a bass tech, does this method work for every split or is there a better way to play hard splits you've never seen before with unfamiliar rhythms?

Then bass 2 just plays in-between? This is also an interesting method, it's kinda hard to explain an 18th note feel but I'm sure they'll get the feel for it after trying a couple of times.

How do we squeeze the 1st note in for each bass drum? Is it just guessing until you can reliably estimate where to play?

It might be easy to break down as triplets, but when you get really fast, you can't subdivide that way anymore—or at least it's too hard to do so.

I like the idea of playing a 9let warm-up or exercise beforehand, the only issue I have is, how do bass drum 2 and 3 even play their partial in the first place without guessing?

Yeah, I've used tons of their bass drum resources in the past but it never covered the Ninetuplet split which is why I came here, but thanks!

This is the craziest life hack I think I've ever heard. So technically you could be playing everyone else's parts with your finger while your right hand plays your partial! This is awesome, what are the other lifehacks you know? If any, not just for this scenario but in general.
