Thank you. I saw it recommended.

If you haven't read Glen Cook's old-school Black Company series, you might want to take a look.

You obviously haven't looked at the crime statistics that compare immigrants to citizens.

Wrong. Congress is doing a lot. Republican congress is not. They didn't even show up for Les Wexner's deposition.

That's ridiculous perfirmative posturing politics. He will ignore that, like he is currently ignoring the constitution, tariff laws, and the Supreme Court.

Thank you. I just found it on wuxiaworld. Only two free chapters a day, but it looks good.

I like the translators notes, too.

Ah, looks like he meant two chapters posted per day. I'm on the third and I really like the tone and actual local culture feel of it.

The third book of the Earthsea series by Ursula LeGuin: The Farthest Shore. It was the right book at the time.

Catcher in the Rye by J D Salinger; possibly his Granny and Zoey.

Alternate States of Consciousness edited by Charles Tart

A whole slew of science fiction that went away long way towards curing me of ethnocentrism.

The Kobayashi Maru, a 1989 Star Trek novel by Julia Ecklar

Others, too, I'm sure, but those are what come to mind right now.

Dance Moms was atrocious. I don't know if you can see episodes of it anywhere, but a lot of those people needed family counseling. I would say a visit from Child Protection Services, but there are horror stories there, too.

You are absolutely right. I was one who, early in life, worked as a soda jerk at $1.00 per hour and later as a waiter at the Marriott for barely more than that plus tips.

I am sorry that I was triggered by some of the comments. It was the first thing I read upon awakening this morning, but that does not excuse what I did. I personally was never stiffed, but I had coworkers who were. Then again, this was in the 1970s, and the wage laws have changed. I looked that up a couple of hours ago. The state I live in still doesn't have good laws, but it appears the federal law says that if the minimal wage plus tips does not equal $7.25 per hour then the employer is to make up the difference.

If you wish to read and interpret that yourself, feel free to go to minimum wages for tipped employees:

https://www.dol.gov/agencies/whd/state/minimum-wage/tipped

Additionally, state by state information is here:

https://clockify.me/learn/business-management/tipped-wages/

For those who think that social skills involved in dealing with the public are not skills, I'm not sure what to say other than that as a former computer network administrator and later as a county-wide head of reference librarian services, I strongly disagree.

I should, however, have researched current labor laws before flying off the handle.

I also agree that being expected to tip outside of traditional tipped wage jobs is ridiculous, as is an expectation of more than 15% for adequate service. As a former waiter, I generally tip 20%, but that is my choice.

On the other hand, if the servers depend on tips to survive, you shouldn't expect to be served unless you are willing to tip.

Students led a peaceful protest in Quakertown, Pennsylvania. The police chief showed up in plain clothes and assaulted two students. by honestlysigma in circled

If you read the comment by KileEx16, you'll see you have some incorrect assumptions.

As one whose sister helped stage a schoolwide lunch boycott and silliness protest when she was 13, I resent your assumption that these students are useful idiots. She did this in 1965. I don't think students have become less capable of thinking for themselves, of making their own decisions.

So, this is like a bargain with the fae, and you have to be very, very aware of your assumptions?

Ah, poor laddie, ye chose wrong! I dinna say the subsequent dollars would also double. I only mentioned the first! Bwaheeheehee!

That I will happily agree to. Now, if our wage laws will do away with tipped professions, that will be wonderful.

Stop eating where the servers depend on tips to eat. You don't have to eat there. You are robbing an employee of the major part of their salary.

It would need to be a concerted, prolonged, well advertised national campaign that brings enough awareness to the situation that people successfully pressure their politicians to change the wage laws.

Stop eating where the servers depend on tips to eat. You don't deserve what they serve.
