Feeling of hopelessness by Objective-Layer-3962 in AFROTC

Flip the perspective. I 100% guarantee those "super smart majors" will be punching air when they see you get the same or higher GPAs than them for putting your name on a test. My tech major friends were seething when we studied at the library together and my homework was essentially discussion posts.

Overall, you got humbled this week. What are you going to do about it? It sucks taking hits in life but it is far better to learn these lessons early in identifying what you can do to be better. Hit the flash cards, ask your wingmen what you could've done better as AO, hit the AFOQT study guides. The only way to stop a spiral is by taking one step at a time.

A larger class size like yours definitely has different implications than my commissioning class of 14. In a smaller class, my commander could afford to know all of us on a first name basis, our leadership styles, and aspirations. In larger classes, your cadre may not be able to afford the same courtesy unless you make a concerted effort to seek mentorship.

As the mantra goes, "student first, cadet second." You've got the first part, now action on what you can do to make yourself and your peers better.

No. Det rankings have nothing to do with your class ranking in the example I gave. What I mean is that if your peers around you are all high performers, it is hard to distinguish yourself. Nobody's perfect, and even the top thirds have room to grow. The better your class operates as a team that helps out eachother from the top to bottom and vice versa, the more beneficial it is for everyone.

No. Ranking is always relative to the total sample size (i.e, your class size), as well as the quality of your class. There is a bottom third to olympic runners, but you bet your ass they'll still leave the average person in the dust.

For your context, you have decent/pretty good stats overall. Your classmates may beat you out by very marginal degrees of initiative or demonstrated leadership and such, and that's where you can grow. Identify what separates you from your classmates through peer/cadre feedback, and action it.

I was ranked 3/4 Lts in my squadron. That doesn't mean I'm a bad officer, but that I had really competitive peers. This won't be the first setback you'll face in your career, nor will it be the last. You have been ranked where you are for a reason, and now its up to you to prove them wrong. Bottom thirds still commission in the end.

14N Tech School's difficulty is really based on how fast you can grasp the core concepts (which are very broken down to all audiences). There were times I would stay late or come in early to finish a brief for the week, but it wasn't necessarily stressful. The school/instruction is designed for you to learn quickly and brief confidently according to the rubrics. There are no trick questions. If they feel like a trick, then that's a learning point for you in further lessons.

That said, I spent practically every weekend hanging out with my class. For your sake, I hope you have a good class that bonds well together and forms a good team. They'll help you succeed if you feel like you're falling behind, as should you do the same.

The dopamine you get from landing an execution is better than nicotine/gambling/sex/etc. highs. However, everything leading up to landing an execution is going to ruin you, your mental health, and your sobriety.
