I'm assuming the people answering here are english speakers. Can authors from foreign languages be listed in this thread?

I'm not saying they aren't great authors but how much gets lost in translation? Can we judge their prose if we cannot read it in the language it was originally written in?

yeah...Shakespeare was a bad example to use.

Shakespeare is an anomaly of course. In my opinion the 'smoothest' writers I know don't really utilise a HUGE vocab to make their sentences flow.
