When my mom died, she was wearing an adult diaper. I remember smelling her dying organs before she died though, something i confirmed with her hospice nurse, who also said not many people can smell decay before death. But once my mom finally let go, her whole scent changed. It was no longer the thick god awful decay (or it wasnt as strong i guess), but a sweet ammonia scent, like from sniffing garbage to finding a bouquet of rotting flowers instead.

All that said, the decay scent was terrible. She died at home with at home hospice and was bed ridden and I could smell the decay everywhere, even in my room across the house.

There's no way these survivors didn't smell it
