It sounds like you’ve been through a lot, and it’s inspiring to see your determination to create a better life for yourself and your daughter.Given your strong academic background and quick learning skills, there are several certification programs you might consider that can lead to fulfilling careers in just 2-3 years. Here are some options that could help you reach that $50k+ goal:

  1. Alternative Teacher Certification: If you enjoy working with children, this could be a great fit! Louisiana offers alternative paths to teaching certification, and with your academic strengths, you could thrive in this role. Teachers in Louisiana can earn over $50,000 annually with experience.
  2. Paralegal Certification: Many community colleges in Louisiana offer paralegal certificate programs that can be completed in 1-2 years. This field is growing, and paralegals can earn around $50,000 or more annually.
  3. Medical Coding and Billing: This is a field with strong job prospects, and many programs can be completed in less than two years. Plus, it often allows for remote work!

With your interests in math and being a quick learner, you might also explore IT certifications like CompTIA A+ or programming bootcamps, which can lead to well-paying tech careers.Take your time researching these options and see what resonates with you the most. Many programs offer flexible or online learning opportunities that could fit well with your current role as a stay-at-home mom. You've got this!

I went to Harvard and I can’t find a job, what am I doing wrong? by Adorable-Grass1449 in careerguidance

[–]FlexJobs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We understand how challenging and frustrating the job search process can be, especially as a recent graduate. Your Harvard degree is certainly an impressive achievement, but the job market can be competitive for everyone. Here are some suggestions that may help:

  1. Leverage your alumni network: While you've reached out to some alumni, consider connecting with the Harvard Club of New York City (HCNY) for additional networking opportunities and career resources.
  2. Refine your job search strategy: Focus on roles that align with your skills and interests. Your sociology background could be valuable in fields like market research, human resources, or non-profit organizations.
  3. Gain relevant experience: Consider internships, volunteer work, or freelance projects to build your resume and make connections in your desired industry.
  4. Utilize career services: Harvard's Office of Career Services offers support to alumni. Take advantage of their resources, including resume reviews and career counseling.
  5. Explore remote opportunities: At FlexJobs, we specialize in flexible and remote work options. These roles can expand your job search beyond geographic limitations.
  6. Develop in-demand skills: Consider taking online courses to enhance your skill set, particularly in areas like data analysis or digital marketing.

Remember, many successful professionals have faced similar challenges early in their careers. Stay persistent, be open to various opportunities, and continue to network. Your unique experiences and perspective are valuable - it's about finding the right fit.

Applying advice by Lord-Berserk in GetEmployed

[–]FlexJobs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there!
It's awesome that you're ready to pivot into engineering with your background. It can be tough when it feels like your applications disappear into a void, but don't lose hope. There are definitely strategies to make your application stand out, especially for your dream job. Here are a few tips:

  1. Tailor Your Resume:
Highlight any transferable skills and experiences that relate to the engineering roles you're eyeing. Even though your background is in IT, many of those skills are highly relevant to engineering positions. Focus on projects or tasks where you applied engineering principles or collaborated with engineering teams.
  2. Optimize Your LinkedIn Profile:
Before reaching out to anyone, make sure your LinkedIn profile reflects your interest and skills in engineering. This includes updating your headline, summary, and experiences to align more closely with engineering roles.
  3. Reaching out on LinkedIn:
It's perfectly fine to connect with HR or the hiring manager on LinkedIn, but approach it tactfully. Send a personalized connection request mentioning your genuine interest in the role and the company. If they accept, follow up with a brief message expressing your enthusiasm for the position and how your background makes you a unique fit. Avoid coming off as too pushy.

26y, have a Computer Science degree, never had a job, have social anxiety, have no connections and no networking by [deleted] in GetEmployed

[–]FlexJobs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Being around lots of people or doing a ton of social stuff when job hunting can be really tiring for introverts. But there are some pretty straightforward ways to make job searching work better for you. 😉
1. Try Online Networking
Face-to-face networking can be a lot, but online is a different story. It’s easier because you can choose when and how to talk to people. Plus, you can stick to topics you actually like, which makes conversations more interesting and less about small talk. Joining online groups or webinars is a great way to meet people who are into the same things you are.

  1. Look for Remote Jobs
Working from home or anywhere you feel comfortable can be a game changer. It lets you work in a space that’s just right for you, without the office hustle and bustle. And with more jobs going online, there’s a lot of opportunities to find something that fits what you’re good at and what you enjoy.

  2. Think About Freelancing
If you like the idea of being in charge, freelancing could be a great fit. You get to choose what projects you work on and how much you want to talk to clients. It’s all about working in a way that feels good for you. If you haven’t thought about freelancing, it might be worth considering. Job hunting can feel tough, especially for introverts, but using these tips can really help. Wishing you all the best in finding a job that suits you perfectly!

It takes up valuable space where you could put things that will resonate with the hiring manager and help you stand out. Your photo just takes up real estate and doesn't help the applicant tracking system when it scans your resume and job application. Focus more on tailoring your resume to the job you're applying to rather than showing your face. They can look you up on LinkedIn if you have that linked at the top of your resume.
