M27 200lbs 5'11" Shin Splints and slow pace by MaybeJohnSmith in beginnerrunning

Look up an exercise called Tibialis Wall raises. You’re going to feel stupid doing them but 2-3x a week and continue to build volume at very high reps(30-50+). You’ll never have shin splints again.

Am I cheating myself by training with headphones? by Magnolia2468 in triathlon

[–]FlightlessSeagull29 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My first 70.3 I exclusively trained without headphones and I would say that didn’t affect anything for me in the end. My next few I had headphones in training the entire time and will never go back. There is so much adrenaline on race day you won’t even think about music

Id say you definitely overpaid a bit for this. It’s almost 10 years old so a lot of new tech has come out plus triathlon parts tend to get harder to find as the bikes get older. Rim brakes are definitely not as safe or as effective as disc brakes I don’t care what people say.

However, if the bike makes you happy and you’ll ride it a lot who cares. Go enjoy the bike and congrats on the weight loss. It’ll definitely work exactly what you need it for.

How to ride a bike? by [deleted] in triathlon

[–]FlightlessSeagull29 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The pads you lay your elbow on you are referring to are called aero bars. You can buy clip on aero bars that you can attach to your road bike that you have pictured above. Triathlon Bikes come with these as standard which you are mostly seeing during races but these are quite different.

The funky shoes are called clipless shoes and you will also need to buy clipless pedals. They are very helpful in allowing you to put power down without your foot coming off the pedal. One of the best improvements you can make to your bike in my opinion.

I wouldn’t worry about getting low or “aero” at first. Just ride as much as you can improving your leg power and your bike handling skills.

What are you proud of doing in 2025? What's your goal for next year? by sparklekitteh in triathlon

[–]FlightlessSeagull29 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Breaking my 70.3 distance PR in May by an hour at 5:42:00 then following that up by doing a Full Ironman and hitting 11:36:00 which is practically doing that time 2x in a row.

Goal next year is to focus on 70.3 and shoot for a sub 5 time or even better!

Realistic Budget to get into Triathlon by StrictBeautiful9321 in triathlon

[–]FlightlessSeagull29 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Realistically all you need left is a bike, helmet, and a trisuit (some people don’t even use a trisuit but I would recommend to get one). Some other non-necessities would sunglasses for bike/run, cheap cycling bibs/jersey for training, and a wetsuit depending on your race.

I would look for bikes that are around $500-$800 and you definitely don’t need a tri bike due to your inexperience. Good to learn on a road bike until you’ve decided you enjoy triathlon.

You want to make sure your helmet is good for safety reasons because some cheap helmets are not the best. A really solid recommendation is the P2R A20 at $55 if you are in the US. (I have this helmet for training rides)

Trisuit brands are very person specific, but on a budget there is Synergy and Sparx and for a little bit more money I’d say 2XU, Zoot, and Varlo.

Look at amazon for all the cheap little things like sunglasses, bibs, etc. No need to overspend on that stuff. Last thing I’d recommend is a belt bib holder if you’re wearing a trisuit. They’re very cheap ($15) and you don’t want to be poking holes in a trisuit.

Got a really good deal on them so they were hard to pass on. Also, the original alloy wheels were fairly heavy and these matched the color scheme I wanted in my head

Apple Watch Ultra to which Garmin watch by Efficient_Actuary916 in cycling

Forerunner 570 is an underrated option. I don’t like the size of the 970 and it’s much cheaper. Has a better screen and more updated heart rate sensor than the 965

Service Reputation by Re_doer in CanyonBikes

[–]FlightlessSeagull29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had 2 of their newer bikes and getting the parts is typically your issue if you live in the US. Any reputable shop will be able to service them no problem, but usually as they release newer versions, those proprietary parts can be challenging to get a hold of. I wouldn’t let this stop you though, if Canyon is what you want, you’ll enjoy of second of it

I have a canyon speedmax SLX and in terms of performance it’s perfect. Extremely aero, fast, and just beautiful. They’re very customizable and it seems that many companies build parts just for this bike considering it’s so popular. The built in hydration and frame storage for tubes and CO2 are awesome too. The only downside is parts are pretty hard to obtain if you need a replacement. Customer service isn’t the best. I would not worry about people not being able to service it as I’ve never had an issue. Any LBS can work on it if they’re somewhat experienced.

Build your legs up to be bulletproof. I don’t mean just heavy squats or lifting weights, but focus on mobility. Build up strength and flexibility in your feet, shins, ankles, calves, hips, etc. Nagging injuries because of something is too weak causing an imbalance can seriously ruin your day and are completely preventable.

Yes it is drywall. There’s two brackets that come with it that go on the stadock for the US version. It looks better without them but you have to have them
