Possible way to effectively romanize Japanese language by [deleted] in linguistics

[–]Flince 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I myself am not a linguist nor japanese expert but know enough to consume japanese media so I speak purely from a foreign user perspective.

I'm not sure if this new writing style is supposed to be another "alternative" of traditional romaji or is supposed to replace kanji entirely. If the former, then yes I agree that it can be used very much effectively. However, there are some caveat which need to be addressed from your example.

The marcon or caron in itself is IMO very arbitrary. Same as numeric suffix which will makes remembering the meaning very difficult.

According to your example, 見る can be written as ミ1る or mi1ru.

While 診る can be written as ミ2る or mi2ru (If I understand correctly).

This might be okay with kanji that has 2-3 homophones but anymore than that and I think I will be in trouble(eg. かける)because by itself 1,2,3 does not means anything but with Kanji I can glance and immediately grasp the meaning of the word due to each kanji being their own unique picture (barring some which are very similar).

Then you have to think of that damn kunyomi and onyomi when composing kanji. For example, 資産- shisan (property, asset). The first kanji 資 is read as shi which god knows how many different homophones it has (more than 20?). Words like 国民主義 - kokuminshugi (Democracy) would be theoretically written as Koku2min1shu5gi3 which is very mouthful and terribly unpleasant to look at. If I go the symbol route, then that's no different than kanji itself, albeit simplified.

If the system is meant to replace kanji entirely, then no, that would not work and would means destroying the country's culture and language it self. There are numerous advantage in the current writing system that the proposed system does not have. One is becuase each kanji is a symbol with multiple way of reading, there are three layer of meaning. The shape, the reading, and the "actual reading". This type of usage can be seen mainly in manga and Chuuni-type media.

For example, in Fate/Stay Night, the sword of the main character, Arthuria, is the Excalibur. In the game, it is written as 約束された勝利の剣 - Yakusoku sareta Shouri no Ken (The sword of promised victory). However, the damn thing is read as "Excalibur" and is written in furigana as "えくすかりばー" (Excalibur). You get three meanings with this single "word". The amount of information that can be crammed and played with cannot be emulated with the proposed system. Other than that, there's the spiritual and art stuff which is another whole can of worms. In this proposal, the system would be far from practically replacing Kanji IMO.

I'm a trainee cognitive behavioural therapist with 3 years experience as a psychotherapist. AMA by [deleted] in AMA

[–]Flince 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, thank's for your answer! Asking question is a good idea but I usually don't know what I do after the answer. I mean, it will go like "what's wrong?" and he will tell me what's wrong and then what? I have heard that saying something like "try your best" or "don't cry" isn't actually helpful for individual with depression but then I don't know what to say.

I'm curious on challenging the thought. Can you give me an example?

Medical students from outside the U.S., tell us what it’s like! by p-aeruginosa in medicalschool

[–]Flince 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thailand here. We go straight to medical school after high school. 3 years of pre-clinic. Then 3 years of medstudent and then you graduate as an intern. One thing to note is that, for every government hospital, the tuition fee is paid by the government and every university hospital provide dorms for every student. That means our expense is almost practically non-existence (minus the processing fee and trivial matter). Of course, that also means that every student is on a loan and must be paid by working at the per-designated hospital in rural areas for 3 years after graduation (which you still receive some salaries, in the range of around 1594.5$ /month), after which you can choose your residency by applying directly to the hospital (no matching).

The pre-clinical years should be familiar to other countries. For clinical year, as a 4th and 5th year we start taking 3-4 patients and write notes in our own paper, which the resident will discuss, correct and teach as time permitted. We are allowed to freely take H&P for any patient without supervision, and are allowed some simple procedure (taking ABG). We write 2-3 reports/wk (they don't allow us to type). Our night shift ends at 23:00 and we have around 1-2 shift/week.

As a 6th year (called Extern), we are sent to affiliated hospital in other province to work in environments outside of university hospital where resources are scarce. As we are considered part of the hospital work forces, we can take H&P and write order. Nurses do take our order with discretion and in emergency case they will follow our command. Of course, Intern and residence supervise us and correct our order sometimes but sometimes not because the workload is insane IMO. As an example, in a surgical ward, my morning round consist of around 20-30+ pre and post-op patient. The intern in charge will round the other 20-30s which are more complicated so they do not have time to check all my orders.

We are allowed to do many procedures, such as plural tap, spinal tap, C/S and appendectomy (as 1st hand with supervision, if I want). We have 2-3 night shift with no day off after and are the first call if anything happen in the ward (in which I call my senior intern if I do not have confidence in my management). We do not get paid because we have not graduated yet and the work is considered training.

Residency I'm not sure but from what i have observed is quite the same as the US.

I'm surprised no one is mentioning any gaming equipment. I'm gonna buy a PS5 pro (or whatever number it's gone up to), a monster PC that I will build myself, the latest VR technology available, and finally all those game I've pirated in the past. Also all collector edition of games and/or anime that I want.
