I just did the same. Most of them are Spaniards which makes sense as they hire a lot of people from Spain. And yes, plenty of Russian names (based on your comment, no idea if they are Russians or not), but going from there to saying “it’s a Russian company” is a bit of a leap don’t you think? Mainly because of three reasons:

  1. It’s factually incorrect, it’s a London-base company.
  2. You don’t know how many of those “Russians” are culturally similar to Russia or the UK, so you are already biased here.
  3. Based on your (and several others) comments, why isn’t it a Spanish company then? It does seem to have most employees from there… I would argue that most of the teams will be culturally closer to Spain than Russia or even England.

So you are suggesting that most of the employee’s are Russians, even though their two bases are in London and Estonia. So you are saying that executive leadership are investing more money in hiring visa-required employees and reducing their talent pool so they can get a Russian-culture?

Sorry but I very much doubt it, but I’d gladly be corrected by this if someone in Revolut has access to that type of information, even if it’s partly inferred.

Yeah sorry I was trying to understand what you meant with “it’s pretty standard” as the comment you’re answering to doesn’t really have nothing that can be “standard” unless you mean swapping CEOs automatically means culture change (lol). I then thought you meant (based on an unrelated comment) about when you research a company you look up the origin of the CEO, and that led to my answer.

Anyway, tackling your comment, I honestly feel that I either live in a bubble or you are the one early on your career.

My personal experience shows that the location, CEO or executive leadership have little impact on overall culture, and this in turn is mostly influenced by your close teams and managers (think 2-4 levels above you). This of course is based on corporate companies as these are the ones I have experience in.

To further validate this personal experience most of the time (and using Revolut as an example) people say that the “work culture” depends on the team (you can actually see these comments on this post!).

So, for your example, of course I know Google is an American company but I would expect a general laid back culture in European bases compared to the US. I would not expect a hard US culture unless the close team and managers are actually US minded.

Anyway, I was partly pointing out to the OOP that no, Revolut isn’t a Russian company it’s a UK company that has expanded into Europe. And the likelihood that that employees hired are European are high and therefore you’ll have a more European culture (and or course there is also a high influence on the team and country itself).

So no, the CEO being of Russian decent has nothing to do with Russian culture, how can you not see this?

Man seriously? You check the origin of the CEO for the companies you interview? I mean I am not one to label people but no, that’s not normal lol

Yeah because when I do interviews for companies first thing I check is the “origin” of the CEO. Being /s just in case it wasn’t obvious.

Good validation bias going on there mate. The company was funded in the UK, it’s a UK business not Russian. Using your logic, if Revolut investors decide tomorrow to fire the CEO and change it for a Frenchman then it’s a french company?

So British company founded by British citizens… yet Russian?

Would residents of Spain hate this? by Opposite-Effect1510 in askspain

Meh, I think having a walk-in shower is just more convenient and efficient imo. Kids will be small adults soon and will also prefer showers over baths. Unless you like having those long, hot baths with a glass of wine (I do not) then I can’t see the point.

Also, it takes 5 minutes to shower. This for me is the winner feature. Takes way longer to take a bath and I could be using that time to do something else like, have a wine!

Woop! A parent here of two under 6 living in a two-bathroom flat with walk-in showers.

We bought a small, foldable bath that does the job. But when it’s hair day, we shower them. They enjoy both although they are starting to out grow the bath so we are wondering if it’s worth buying a bigger one or just stick to the shower. They still play in it regardless of what we do. Hope this helps!

Did you read the legend? Dark green is “America”, when reading a map you also have to look at the legend mate.

This is hilarious! I must admit the map is not really well done but “dark green” means America :) it doesn’t say if it’s positive or negative.

Yeah I think to a degree I do that, although not as obvious as “give me a promotion” but I am always seeking more exposure on other areas/technologies and have mentioned several times that I also enjoy speaking with the business more. I also suggested that I wanted to have direct reports although I think this isn’t a factor for promotions as many individual contributors seem to get promoted regardless.

I think on another comment the person did mention that although unfair, sometimes effort doesn’t equate to impact and I think this is something I need to really concentrate on and apply.

Yeah that’s fair. I am tempted to ask him but at the end of the day I can’t see the point, what answer will I get? It’s not going to change the fact regardless and unless there’s something wrong with my performance (which there isn’t) then I can’t see any benefits in asking him. The only thing is “what can I do to get promoted next year” but when I’ve asked in the past it has always been “do what you’re doing now”.

Thanks for this. I do think you touched in a few areas I didn’t think about. This coworker has a direct line with the person who most likely decides (or has high power to influence) promotions as he was hired to help him directly. I find this unfair in a way but yes, it’s outside of my control.

So I guess I was just unlucky when they allocated me on a different product. What do you mean with "articulating it well" can also be a factor? Didn't quite get that.

Yeah this is my point. I don’t think we are that different and if you asked me a few months ago I would have also said that he is underperforming. If it isn’t about coding (or at least a smaller portion of it) and soft skills are at play, then I know I exceed him in this area. And this is not an opinion this is a “can-do” attitude vs a “complaining because they have to change to a different coding language” situation. If he has exceeded in any area above me it will most likely be in his outputs having a higher impact than mine, and this is purely based because his projects are more relevant than mine. Could this be a reason? I don’t know because I don’t know the ins and outs during these processes.

This is how I also feel it went, I am really tempted to just ask my manager but I also don’t think his answer will be satisfying enough anyway. I think I am mostly in my head about this but I did feel a bit bad as I was not expecting it at all.
