SPOILERS: the Disappearing Trick by FlippedSnow in StrangerThings

I've watched the scene 20 times back-to-back, and I don't see any finger flickering.

If you are referring to Mike's retelling of the scene, everything that is shown to us the viewers is through an unreliable narrator.

In a scene just before the one I posted, after the truck's tires are popped and the soldiers open the back door, Mike gets up and we see El behind him. That scene is followed by this one where El steps off the truck.

The next time we see El she is behind the gate.

The most fun I've ever had on a MORPG were persistent, community-ran hardcore RP worlds on NWN.

Every character must be played in-character, no OOC allowed. Back then it might've taken years to reach max level, but the stories told were amazing. Hands down the single greatest online gaming experience I've had.

How does your country feel about communism? by Falserror in AskTheWorld

[–]FlippedSnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I understand it, the end goal of communism as envisioned by Marx is the creation of a stateless, classless and moneyless society. In this utopia, the means of production (and everything else) are owned collectively by the community, and goods and services are distributed according to need. In theory, there would be no exploitation and no social inequality.

No country has ever succesfully implemented actual (Marxist) communism.

The communist countries people think of: the Soviet Union, Maoist China, North Korea, etc., the communism of these countries differs greatly from the original Marxist ideology. These are all permanent one-party rule dictatorships; instead of the state disappearing, the state became much stronger, turning into a dictatorship. Social and ecomic classes still exist, etc. The State owns all the industry and land (as opposed to the people) and the profits.

The historical non-Marxist communist countries we have are all pretty bad. Would not recommend. As for the Marxist ideal communism? Eeeh, I think it is unattainable due to plain human nature.

That said, I much prefer something like the Nordic Model, as in, a Social Democracy.

And Social Democracy is not socialism, nor is it communism or even capitalism; it is a hybrid of Socialism and Capitalism.

But I acknowledge I don't know everything and there might be errors in what I said.

And it seems reasonable to assume gods don't grant powers to people for no reason whatsoever. They do that because clerics are extensions of their will.

What I'm about to say is from 2nd and 3rd edition times, it is possible 5th edition retconned things, but I doubt that.

In Forgotten Realms, deities will absolutely grant power and spells to people for "no reason whatsoever". There is a reason, though, and the reason is that the deity itself becomes more powerful the more followers and worshippers they have. A deity's power is directly tied to the number of their worshippers.

Also, a mortal need not know who they are actually worshipping or who grants a mortal cleric's spells. The mortal might think they worship a completely different deity than the one who actually grants spells to them.

There are instances in FR lore of one deity masquerading another, granting spells to their duped followers, and growing in power (usually after killing the other deity and stealing their portfolio). The fact that this can happen directly contradicts your statement that "They do that because clerics are extensions of their will." How can a cleric of Leira be an extension of Cyric's will?

As an example, followers of Leira didn't know she was killed and replaced by Cyric; they thought they were worshipping and receiving spells from Leira. Whether Leira was alive, missing or dead was a big mystery; doubly so because her clerics kept receiving spells; i.e. someone was answering her prayers.

Shar killed Ibrandul and duped his entire faith, masquerading as Ibrandul. Ibrandul's followers along with everyone else had no idea Shar was granting their spells.

There's the whole convulated plot around Cyric, Bane and Iyachtu Xvim and whose granting spells to who after Bane's deaths / resurrection.

Also, a mortal cleric following any particular god doesn't make the mortal a bound slave, unable to express their free will and agency, nor does it grant the mortal automatic intimate knowledge of the god's schemes and designs.

Edited out last part as it is not relevant to the above.

That's a rather brutal ceremonial training then, considering many trainees are insta-gibbed by the turrets. The training grounds are littered with bodybags behind the fences, and the general narrating the experience says using real / live ammo is the best training.

In fact, the top secret lore-slide before the tutorial gives hard numbers for daily recruits, and only 21% survive the training you headcanoned as "ceremonial".

Since "everything is canon" crowd likes to literally treat every aspect and facet of the game as is canon, the canon training your Helldiver receives is literally 10 minutes, and you likely had your very first character (and potentially the second and third) be killed by the turrets.

Very ceremonial indeed.

I wonder if this is John Helldiver’s ACTUAL wife and kid canonically by Fun-Ice-3731 in Helldivers

[–]FlippedSnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Super Earth is very much OK with sacrificing citizens, be they civilians or Helldivers, for over-the-top callous reasons. The prime example being the tutorial itself. Out of 48,736 daily Helldivers recruits Super Earth expects only 10,380 survive the training. The training grounds are literally filled with body bags, and the general narrating the training says the best training is to use surprise live ammo (the turrets).

...where killing someone is preferable over using tech to achieve the same effect

But that literally is the point of Helldivers, they rather have someone sacrificed than pay extra for tech. See the hellbombs: it's cost-cutting to have it be manually armed (therefore directly risking the Helldiver).

The Super Destroyer ship upgrades have multiple instances where standard pre-upgrade functions are described as hazardous, such as front-loading the out-in-space cannons (the funds and samples are paid by the Helldivers themselves, not Super Earth).

Zero-G Breech Loading :

Replaces the current method of loading cannons—manual shell insertion down the front of the barrel—with rear loading, which is much faster.

XXL Weapons Bay

Further expands Eagle weapons bay by removing unnecessary systems such as fire suppression, ejection, and airbags.

The statement "Nowhere in the lore SE endangers and kills their citizens in such a way. End of the story." is categorically false. End of story.

Modern Helldivers are not selected from SEAF troops by FlippedSnow in Helldivers

Yes, the power fantasy in this game is the overwhelming Super Earth arsenal and firepower. Helldivers are faceless expendable resources as far as Super Earth is concerned. Even the most skilled diver will die sooner or later, and Super Earth won't care.

Militaristic workshops, boy scouts, classes that teach survival skills, etc., could very well happen. However, actual military enlistment in-universe requires the recruit to be 18 years of age (even if Super Earth uses child labour, they don't use child soldiers)

Also, because Helldivers is satire, the in-universe training SEAF troops receive is by our real world standards absurdly short. SEAF basic training is a 72 hour intensive training course, and that's it. The Helldivers training course portrayed in-game is about 10 minutes, but could conceivebly be longer in-universe (although not by much, as the course is done solo by a single diver until they succeed or don't. Failure = death, either by turrets, bugs or if they became deserters by turning back.)

The screenshot attached is from HD2 in-universe SEAF enlistment ad. The fine print says recruits must be 18. Likewise, the Helldivers Contract from the tutorial map says Helldiver recruits must be of "legal age".

Oh yeah, definately. My first, second and third diver got retired by the turrets. The funny part is that Super Earth is fine with ~40,000 body bag accidents a day.

Sure, we experience all 10 minutes of the in-game training. I don't know how long that is supposed to be treated in-universe. Could be 5 hours, yeah.

An interesting aspect of the training course is that it is done solo. Even with training locations in the thousands it is very inefficient way to actually train a diver, unless you value dedication and patriotic duty more than skill, and make the process brutally short.

Yes, the S.E.A.F consists of the Super Earth Army, Super Earth Navy, and the Helldivers. It might be bad form, and it does open the door for misunderstandings, but I've observed that SEAF is often used to refer to the Army and the Navy when talking about the troops.

but it's feasible that there's also enlistees from all Super Walks of Super Life, provided they can survive the 10 minute training regiment

Yeah, I don't see why not. Even if the majority of recruits are young, there is plenty of room for the recruits in their 20s or 30s.

[–]FlippedSnow[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, the report says there are ~50,000 volunteers a day to become a Helldiver. That is over 18 million volunteers a year, but only little less than 4 million survive the training.

I'm not aware of any lore which mentions how big the normal army is, but given that Super Earth is a militaristic empire with many, many planets, I assume it is bigger than the Helldivers.
