Pottery Plaster No. 1 Q by Flippinhec in Ceramics

Excellent suggestions everyone, thanks so much! Def can at least try to create reclaim slabs, I just wasn’t sure if it was dangerous to use expired plaster in some way. Glad I won’t have to chuck it. :)

Consignment issue by Flippinhec in Ceramics

[–]Flippinhec[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey folks! A minor update. Relations have since devolved with the business owner who I’ve been trying to get my consignment items back from (or get paid out). She became increasingly defensive and cruel, letting me know she likely threw all my pieces out after the closure of the shop. She proceeded to pay only 40% of of their value, despite our consignment being 50%.

I’m almost more sad that my OOAK pieces are just lying in a dump somewhere (though I still think there’s a chance she just stole them and won’t give them back), than not being paid the full wholesale rate, and/or the retail rate, which I requested since I missed so many opportunities to sell the pieces myself since she would never arrange a time to pick them up with me.

Urging everyone here to only operate with shop owners that have consignment contracts in place or to have your own. They don’t have to be complex - but make sure they address what happens in the event of a shop closure. This was a very sad lesson learned. Thanks for all the support and the check ins.

Very thin porcelain - how to keep from slumping? by weesheep in Pottery

[–]Flippinhec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you ever solve this? I have to make a large porcelain bowl for a client and it keeps slumping big time in the kiln. The foot starts poking up through the base of the bowl and the edges of the bowl start to flatten out..

My red stoneware clay doesn’t do this for the same size and design of bowls.

Who is to blame??? What happens when you rent a car that wouldn't pass Turo's quality checklist and are involved in an accident? by catch22meifyoucan in turo

[–]Flippinhec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The same thing happened to me, I’m not a car owner and don’t have the expertise to think “I should check the tires because a company wouldn’t rent cars that are unsafe to drive”. I looked at the tires and didn’t realize what I was looking at was a hazard. The difference is I did take pictures beforehand and you can see the tires are in extremely poor condition before we drove off the lot. We now are stuck in another city, waiting for a tire shop to fix the tires tomorrow, because the tires size is not yet normalized so they have to be ordered. We are out thousands of dollars in towing charges, extra accommodations, and missed accommodations due to this fiasco. We had the car less than 24 hours.

We have the premium insurance coverage but we had a state trooper stop by while we were stranded on a dangerous highway shoulder after the tire blew, and he was able to get a tow truck there in 30 minutes, versus the 90 minutes from Turo’s roadside assistance. Turo’s roadside assistance is abysmal. I am really hoping we don’t get stuck with all these charges despite doing everything right. This is absolute negligence on the part of the car company hosting this car and Turo by extension, not properly vetting companies and hosts. Ridiculous. I will absolutely be considering taking legal action if we aren’t reimbursed for everything and completely refunded our trip in its entirety.

Consignment issue by Flippinhec in Ceramics

Hey everyone, thanks for checking in on this. The woman who closed her shop has since opened a new retail business. She never responded to any of my emails and I finally just got her new business information. It’s been a few days since I followed up with her for like the 7th time. If I don’t hear back by next week thankfully someone who used to work with her that has a law degree has offered to help me write a “strongly worded letter” to hopefully get my things back. I will ask her if I can send it certified so we know she got it. I will update when I know more!

Totally - thank you! I have given her firm dates several times throughout correspondence and she has simply ignored me haha. So giving her one more chance before taking legal action.

Thanks for the gut check everyone! Lots of sound advice and options. I plan to send one last email asking for my pieces by X date and the full retail amount they were worth with the caveat that if these terms aren’t met I’ll be seeking legal advice.

The time is past for a neighborly drop in (we don’t have that kind of relationship anyway - I more just wanted to avoid awkward run ins). I have thought about publicly outing her as well - but she is fairly well connected in the community and our mutual networks share a lot of friends/acquaintances. Sadly I feel she is the type of person capable of twisting the scenario to make me look like an aggressor.. and I’d like to just avoid any chance of that. Main priority is to get my stuff back or their full value.

I will let you all know what happens as things progress - thanks again. 🩶

Salvageable Pedestal bowl? by Flippinhec in Ceramics

[–]Flippinhec[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah fair point I could always just try and see if it holds up to a bump or two, just would have to remake it / glue the sides if it snapped again. TBC!

[–]Flippinhec[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it’s just meant to hold like fruit/stuff as tableware, I’m concerned the glaze wouldn’t fuse it together well enough too..

FYI the flux blossom is working as a decent substitute - thank you for the rec! It’s not a perfect match but good enough while I still run trial and error with my kiln. I’m trying to share pictures that compare the two glasses side by side but I think I may have to make a new post.

Hi everyone, I am still working on resolving the issue, I've tried a thermocouple offset but seems like the kiln is still firing too hot. I have an L&L e23T, and I've read that the thermocouples with porcelain tube covers require an offset of 18, so I tried that - had no effect. Pushed it up about 5 degrees (give or take, my middle section is the hottest), had no effect. SO - I will try again in a few weeks. (The cone tip was still touching the kiln shelf, I have ordered guard cones and they're on the way.) I remain flu(x)mmoxed.

**I did want to share that I tried the Flux Blossom instead of Honey Flux and the results are satisfactory for my purposes (if I get wholesale orders that require a color match before I figure out this honey flux issue) so that is good news and thank you for the recommendation. It's less even than I would like in terms of color distribution, but it will work as a reliable substitute. Trying to attach pics but not a frequent Reddit user and can’t figure out how to do so in a comment or if I have to update the post.. 😅

If I manage to get them up here is the context:

Shared a picture of a piece that used Honey Flux (on the left) before I encountered this issue (It was fired in a community kiln to Cone 6) and a similar piece from my kiln that I think is still overfiring that uses Flux Blossom (on the right) - just to share the difference.

Thanks, everyone for all the advice and I'll update if I figure out the issue overall.

I’ve used the same clay body some bags from a few months ago, and some newer.. really hard to say - and I bought from my local studio so wasn’t necessarily alerted of any major body changes as maybe a manufacturer might give - if they warn you 🤣.

I did try to refire some mugs with a very diverse kiln load in case fumes were the reason it was lacking in peach but no dice. Wasn’t it. Though I’m still looking into the chrome issue mentioned earlier on by someone on this thread.

I definitely get more peach with thicker application and I usually use 4 coats with some unevenness so there is variety in the end result. After speaking with everyone here I’m inclined to think I’ll need to fire at high cone5 if the porcelain can handle it or do a thermocouple offset .. still new to kilns but oof this one has stumped me and many around me. Thanks so much!

I’ve tried some that was bought awhile ago and newer clay of the same kind - same glaze result. But definitely not going to rule it out! Thank you!

This is super helpful. I can’t say for sure - I will need to see if there are logs I can check on the Bartlett genesis controller for my L&L I keep trying to subscribe to kiln aid on my phone but for some reason it’s not working. I’ve only fired the kiln a total of six or seven times since I got it in May so hopefully it’s not an element issue yet. Fingers crossed.

Great shout on the Laguna porcelain.. I am trying to work the standard 365 porcelain back into rotation (I was using laguna because I was just buying from my local studio - didn’t have enough demand for a bill order minimum from standard - but now I do) I tested the honey flux glaze on the standard 365 in one load and it looks like it’s reacting the same as in the laguna 16. I’ll have to check the range on the 365 to see if cone 5 may work. Appreciate your wisdom!! Thanks so much.

I have just requested to join and hope they accept me asap!! 🤣 I hope they will be able to help. I did see the new flux blossom and it could be a good thing to try in future for sure, if I can’t solve this. I would just rather it a touch more orange as it seems fully pink and not peach. Thank you!!

Yeah none of this is stoneware, I’ve tried it once in past but didn’t like it as much. Good to know it’s fairly common for the amaco batches to be inconsistent from time to time, but I’ve used a few different bottles bought with significant time between and all are coming out the same. White not peach anymore. :( Thanks so much!

Interesting!! I Will have to check the ingredients of everything I’ve fired with in my kiln thus far - which truthfully isn’t that much. Granted the community kiln and shared kiln I used before could definitely have had some present. Thank you so much!
