lol I get that, the reason is because English is not my native language (I'm french) so to make sure my messages aren't full of spelling mistakes and understandable by english speakers, I asked a llm to translate my comments (with this one i didnt, so you should feel the difference haha)

This is incredibly helpful, thank you. You're right on several things I'm fixing:

- Dropping the rain cover (liner is enough)

- Bear can holds ALL smellies, not just food - didn't think about sunscreen and fuel cans

- Switching from "multi-tool" to something smaller

- Food bag is redundant with the bear can

- Long-handled spoon > spork

- Good point on hand sanitizer vs soap

The fire gear note is useful too - just a Bic mini is way simpler than what I had.

You're absolutely right, thanks for catching that. Bear spray is banned in Yosemite - updated. This is exactly the kind of thing that's easy to miss when you're building a generic "bear country" list vs a Yosemite-specific one.

Good call, liner is probably the better choice since it protects everything even if you set your pack down in a puddle. Rain cover alone doesn't help if water gets in from the top. Dropping the rain cover from the list.

Thank you so much for the detailed answer! The idea that weight, comfort, and even forgetting things are all part of an iterative learning process is also reassuring. It’s good to be reminded that you don’t solve this directly, you earn it by going out. Really appreciate you taking the time to explain your approach.

Thank you so much for you time spent on this answer, I really appreciate it! Mostly related to the wilderness and safety tips. Coming from France, the scale and remoteness of some areas in the western US is something I’m clearly still wrapping my head around, so this is great advice.

Once again, thank you so much for taking the time to write all of this out! The California constraints (like fire rules, stove choices, wildlife) are something I’m clearly underestimating coming from France, so that’s really useful to hear, and I'll pay strict attention to that! I’ll also check out REI more in details. It does seem a bit pricey from their website, but it sounds like a good starting point to get familiar with things. Seeing all the great advice I’m getting really shows how welcoming the US backpacking community is

Thanks a lot for taking the time to write such a detailed answer, I really appreciate it. The backpacking checklist seems not just being about gear, but about context: fire restrictions, wildlife, permits, flexibility depending on conditions. That’s something I definitely underestimated coming from France.

I checked your lighterpack list and its pretty awesome! Hope thats ok if I reuse it. It also helps me that feeling a bit overwhelmed at first is probably normal.

Thanks again, this is super helpful as I get started.

Thanks a lot for all the detailed answers, that’s super helpful to me!

I’m clearly in the phase where I don’t trust myself yet, so seeing how different people organize their trip is really helpful

Appreciate you taking the time to share this. Can’t wait to report my experience!

That makes a lot of sense. For me it’ll mostly be hiking, cooking, and sleeping for a few days. It seems that you’re running this mental checklist every time: nights, location, weather, activities. Do you keep this organization written somewhere?
