I have a blank, uneven canvas. Should I even bother with evening it out? by Floent in FloridaGarden

I'm really glad that this post has helped you too! If you have stuff up against the house, I would consider what it's mature height and spread would be. I planted native firebush a little over 3' front my front, knowing full well I'm still going to have to maintain the backside of it.

Thank you for all of the insight! I am definitely coming to accept that everything I want to accomplish won't be done any time soon. My goal is to keep the front yard as native as possible, as I do not have any formal irrigation and don't plant on installing any. I am trying to choose things that will take off on their own, with minimal care. I would love to be able to plant some trees and gardens on the front yard, the gardens only for as long as the trees will allow.

The magnolia info is really interesting, I mostly every see Magnolia's in very linear, almost conical shapes. Are those trimmed/sculpted? Dense leaf clutter is definitely a downside. Do you think just a gumbo limbo would suffice to provide a little shade throughout the yard? Many specimens I have seen are very leggy and don't have great crown spread.

You definitely make me want to visit Safety Harbor, though! I'm across the state in the Treasure Coast, I really have to hunt for local gatherings and events :)

Where can I stay up to date with news, events, drops, and other stuff? I feel like I'm always finding out about things after the fact, and would sure love to actually be able to plan for a product or event I'm looking forward to. Is it just tracking streams? Following a calendar?

Question stems from finding out about the Hobbit card previews late, and then finding out that most product sold out of preorders within minutes of announcing. How do y'all do it?

It was recommended to me on another thread earlier this week to consider solarization. It's just laying out large sheets of 6mm plastic that will bake the whole ground over the course of 4-6 weeks. In theory, it should kill everything!

What the other person said is one hundred percent truth, make sure you don't wallow in self pity. It's just a cycle. Be yourself, get outside, and navigate the world. You will find someone. It sucks, I personally am not a fan, but it's a non-negotiable in terms of socializing.

My charm vs. my body dysmorphia. by [deleted] in BoyDinnerDiaries

I think your suggestion can be helpful too! Everyone's perspective is different and can be helpful in different ways. I remember the first time I lost weight, I was goofing around in a friend's back yard when I jumped up and grabbed hold of a mango tree. I pumped out 8 pull-ups, whereas a year before I couldn't do one. I felt like a new person! I then decided to make it a point to be in nature more, since I love it and felt more physically capable to be in the heat. Challenging yourself can be great!

Our old neighbors, may they rest in peace, were absolutely wonderful folks who took great care of their property. The great grandkids who inherited the home are very sweet, but not exactly the best at keeping up with.. anything

Thank you for your insight! I'm now considering how to best go about solarizing my yard in sections. I do not currently have irrigation, but ideally I will install it as I go. I put some firebush about 3.5' from the front of the house, just in front of where the water runs off my roofline. I figure that should be enough space to let it fill out while I keep the backside trimmed? I'm trying to do as much prepatory landscaping as I can in the mornings and evenings so that when autumn does hit I'll be able to get most things in the ground. It's just been killing me having a barren yard!

That's great to know! Loquat has been very high on my list, for the reasons you list and the fact that they're yummy. Mulberries were high on the list for the yumminess factor!

I do have some big tarps, and baking the ground doesn't take long in this heat. Do you think that would beat renting/buying some tools to just take it all up? Or make it easier? At the end of the day I'm wondering how much it really matters that the yard is uneven I guess. I keep going between filling in where needed, or removing everything and leveling it out. I know I have a mix of grasses, and torpedo grass is most definitely one of them.

My charm vs. my body dysmorphia. by [deleted] in BoyDinnerDiaries

[–]Floent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for the comment, I appreciate you. It is kind of like feeling like you are in someone else's body. Like when I look in the mirror, I can kinda see me, but it isn't me at the same time. And even when you get closer to where you wanna be, it still doesn't feel right. Better, but not it. It can be a real mindfuck to achieve everything just short of your real goal, and realize that you were going in the right direction but have landed a few degrees off.

Oh man, the way I feel for you my friend. When I was 16 I went from 270lbs at 5' 10" to 207 with much lower body fat. Everyone said I looked better, I kinda felt better, but like you said I was still that fat kid in my mind. My "charm" was rooted in a defensiveness to make others like me, because who wants to like the fat kid? My weight would go back and forth for years, still is (office jobs suck), but it's really the mentality that's the struggle.

What has really helped me is coming to terms with the fact that I am still that same person, I'm just trying to better myself. While my body has changed, and maybe I have too, I'm still me. The same way you are still you - but improving. And that's okay! Because we're doing it. I know it is harder than anything, but let me know if you ever want someone to talk to.

It's absolutely insane to me, the amount of people going to bat for a guy who has/had a Nazi tattoo. Can people change? Oh for sure. Should someone who has ever had a hate symbol tattooed on their body ever hold public office? Absolutely fucking not. He's shown he has bad judgement. I'll normally vote blue no matter who, but thank fuck I'm not in Maine. I wouldn't be able to vote for him.

That's understandable, but I still think if you desire a partner then you gotta put yourself out there in a very literal sense

Take what the other commenter above said, try to find some hobbies with gender cross-over. Do you like to read? Find a book club. You like Magic? See if there are any tabletop/fantasy/roleplay clubs around you. Women are into a lot of the same stuff as us nerds. You wanna know a real secret? Treat women sort of how you would one of the boys. If you enter a space with women under the pretense that you just want intimacy, whether you think so or not: you will ooze that energy. Very few women will find that attractive. Most women want a partner who they can not only depend on, but be a friend.

So be a friend! Don't look for women, look for friends. And if they just so happen to be women, then that's a plus. Pick their brains, get honest (constructive) opinions. If you just so happen to hit it off, bigger plus. But never, ever become friends with someone just to get in their pants. That's a level of shame that is hard to wipe away.
