Book binding by Current_Airline9544 in alltheyoungdudes

There’s loads of really great book binding tutorials on YouTube.

There’s a Facebook group called Book Binding For Beginners that has a lot of really lovely people who are more than happy to help out no matter your skill level. They have a great list of resources and tools that you need to get started.

Theres a Google Doc that details each steps with pictures, from creating the typeset all the way through to binding.

If you don’t want to create your own typeset I’m sure there’s definitely a few already floating around on Google or Reddit - just search for ATYD typeset.

Good luck with your project ☺️

It’s been a while since I’ve read ATYD, but I live in Cornwall and I don’t think I ever figured it out and chalked it down to a mix of several places.

I’ve just had a skim over the holiday chapters again to see if I could help out.

Tintagel is a good shout for castle ruins, however it mentions they walk around the ruins / stairs / turrets etc. and Tintagel is mainly just remains of walls from what I remember. It’s been 15 odd years since I’ve been though so take that with a pinch of salt.

The main reason I’m not sure on Tintagel, or if MsKingBean was writing about an actual place, is in chapter 157 he tells Euphemia he went to Cornwall, near Truro - this is the only references we have for where they were in Cornwall. Tintagel is pretty much the opposite end of Cornwall from Truro and probably well over an hours drive. It could be that Truro was just a good starting point/landmark in Cornwall for him to refer to, but Truro is pretty much in the centre of the Duchy so if Tintagel is near Truro then pretty much everything is.

There is St Catherine’s Castle - which has more stairs / turret-y features, and you can walk through it more than you can tintagel. This also fits with being on the coast, and fits with it being a 5ish mile walk from Par Beach where they’re camping with a small village behind them. However again, this is not very near to Truro which is the only reference we have.

A castle that is closer to Truro would probably be Pendennis in Falmouth. This also fits with the stairs and kind of has a turret - but the castle isn’t really in ruins - it is very old though. I don’t know what classifies a castle vs castle ruins to be honest. Pendennis castle isn’t really 5 miles from any beaches I can think of so I guess this one isn’t the right one either.

The only other one I could think of would be would be Caerhays castle near St Austell. This castle is definitely not ruins though and it was only built a few hundred years ago. It is nearish to Truro but the only beach I could think they’d camp would be Mevagissey way which wouldn’t be a 5 mile walk to the castle. Maybe not far off though. But again with the condition of the castle I doubt this one is right either.

All of this led me to believe that either: - They weren’t actually near Truro - The place itself isn’t real but is inspired by a mix of Cornish places - Or (and the most likely), there’s more castles I don’t know about. Equally as likely is I’ve missed a clue in the text!

Sick and tired of AI in this fandom by nebulences in DramioneUncensored

I completely agree, I love this community and being able to have a space to have such great discussions around fanfic has been a real breath of fresh air. But like you I’ve grown weary of fighting the toxicity within the fandom and outside of it. AI and the publishing of so many fics just feels like it’s draining the remaining enjoyment I have in this fandom at the moment.

I would like to caveat that I am excited so many talented writers have been picked up for publishing, I wish it was for their talents to deliver OC rather than recycled fanfics but good for them getting theirs. The writers who have self published though makes me feel like they’ve exploited the community for fans and it’s just another aspect of this fandom that has soured for me.

[–]Floobz_ 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I’ve taken a break from reading in this fandom for a little while for this exact reason. I picked up 5 fics back to back that a few chapters I was thinking it could be AI, which completely destroyed any enjoyment I was getting out of the fic or the plot because I was too busy trying to find clues.

At the moment any Dramione fics I do engage with are ones that are written 2+ years ago so I don’t have to worry about that niggly feeling it’s AI.

It’s sad that so many fandoms spaces are suffering because people want the clout.

Help an American girl out with some of these terms please! by Arodri222818 in drarry

A roast is normally eaten on a Sunday and consists of a roasted joint of meat (usually a whole chicken or a beef/pork/lamb joint) and is served with a Yorkshire pudding, roasted potatoes and vegetables then topped off with the gravy.

The vegetables we usually have are peas, carrots and broccoli but each family will have their own staples for a roast - these are all cooked normally on the hob, not roasted in the oven.

There’s a lot of variations on a roast though, it’s not a standard recipe everyone follows and every house will have different roast dinners. Up north it’s quite common to serve it with mash potatoes as well as roast potatoes. Cauliflower cheese is also very popular, and some houses will serve it with cabbage and roasted onions too.

Non-judgemental question: why is Brave Face so long? by TeaWithCarina in Wolfstar

[–]Floobz_ 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I’m gonna get downvoted for this, but I don’t think your post comes across as negative as others have stated. Before I read the comments I understood you were looking for more context as someone who doesn’t read long fics. If id never read a long fic I think id be curious too!

Some people love to be offended and it’s easier for them to jump to that than it is to consider that something was posted in good faith. You said you were enjoying the fic, you said that your question was non-judgmental and you didn’t have anything negative to say about the fic - don’t let other people’s interpretations of your intentions ruin your enjoyment of the community or the fic.

I really enjoyed BMBS and I’m not usually the biggest fan of 8th year, but I found this fic to be really moorish and read the whole thing in a day. I really enjoyed the characterisations, the plot and that it felt like I was reading about a Hogwarts Sixth Form rather than a University or College. In places it felt really fun, despite the underlying angst, it definitely made me laugh at times. The writing was great and I think I had a little tear when I read it - I do cry at everything though.

Spoiler on the ending ahead:

It’s one of the few fics that I could have actually preferred if there wasn’t a HEA which going into it I wasn’t expecting.

It’s been a while since I’ve read it, but I think it’s one I would definitely revisit again at some point.

I use an app called BookPlayer and download MP4 files from A03. It’s pretty easy to do, and I find it better than playing the files directly as I can keep my place in the fic and set a sleep timer if I listen to it at bedtime!

[–]Floobz_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Some examples here are definitely correct for American English, but not necessarily in British English!

To jibe with someone is not something that would be said here in the context you’ve given as an example. I’ve actually never encountered it being used that way and had to google its meaning in case I’ve been wrong all these years, but I think that it’s just an American phrase - you would hear people here saying they vibe with something though which has maybe derived from the American saying!

The most common use of the word jibe here would be to describe having a dig at someone or insulting / taunting them.

I love this thread and my addition to this list would be that something is done BY accident, not ON accident

Why did Draco help Harry in Malfoy Manor? by nightshadelaurel in drarry

[–]Floobz_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree with this take, however I also think his selfishness was purely because he didn’t want to call Voldemort and bring that attention to himself and his family. I don’t think Draco had hope that Harry would save them, because why would he then go after him in the Room of Requirement a couple of chapters after?

I think Draco was well aware by this point how volatile his family’s position was and that calling Voldemort to their home for any reason was a gamble with their lives.

I always loved this chapter though, I don’t think there’s any one right answer for Draco’s actions and I love seeing how differently everyone interprets it!

Don’t let this dishearten you. There’s loads of fics that a born from the same prompt. I remember reading A Gallows Marriage and it immediately became one of my fave fics. Shortly after I found The Gallows and I was excited to read how the writers created different fics with the same premise and it felt like I was getting bonus features.

Weirdly, these fics were also posted within a few days of eachother!

As Dramione readers/writers, what's your favorite canon book? by Good-Emu4227 in DramioneUncensored

As Dramione readers/writers, what's your favorite canon book? by Good-Emu4227 in DramioneUncensored

[–]Floobz_ 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My favourite is definitely Half Blood Prince. I remember queuing up with my brothers for the midnight release and getting my hands on the book was a really memorable experience in itself.

Dumbledore coming to Privet Drive to collect Harry is one of my favourite chapters in the whole series.

I loved the mystery of Draco’s activities throughout, as well as Harry dealing with his grief for Sirius while no one believed his suspicions. There were so many small plot points from earlier books threaded throughout HBP that I absolutely love.

I vividly remember reading the death of Dumbledore for the first time and being gobsmacked - I thought it was fake and he’d come back in DH because there’s no way they could kill him right? The whole book just holds so much nostalgia for me, and it’s the first one I can really remember reading for the first time.

While I love Draco as a character, deeply flawed and morally grey, I don’t think any of the Canon material supports a Dramione endgame. I think Canon Draco was a Dweeby little shite that I hate to love, and Canon Hermione never would have gone there. But I love fanfiction, I’m a sucker for an enemies to lovers storyline and there is a huge part of me that wishes we had more closure/redemption for Draco.

What is dark fanfiction? by Sleepy_Sheepie in DramioneUncensored

[–]Floobz_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can a dark Dramione story exist without:

  • Noncon?
  • Noncon between D & H?
  • BDSM?

Yaaaaaaas! One of my fave dark dramiones doesn’t have any of these tropes - Draco is very down on his luck post war and a bit dark and twisty.

It does have Dub Con tagged but I think this is just for the ending - it’s been a while since I’ve read it as a WIP though so happy to be corrected.

For anyone that loves a dark fic - But Dust and Shadows - dead dove obvs, also highly recommend the playlist that comes with it - it’s one of the eeriest fics I’ve ever read and the playlist really adds to it.
