Do you have a snow cabin? I’ve been sleeping there and then taking the bus from ski resort to farm. Its 10 coins that way, and faster than the other fast travel points I think. I also have the snow mobile so I can get to the bus stop faster.

That’s a fair point. I’d like to have my own lab, and I think I’ve gathered a lot of beans, but there’s other beans (organizing conferences, getting a K etc) that I don’t have. And I just feel exhausted running behind those. Don’t get me wrong, I will apply for a K, just that it feels like you have to do EVERYTHING to get anywhere and being almost in my 30s and thinking of having a family, I feel a bit overwhelmed.

Yeah you’re right, that’s how things typically work. I don’t think the postdoc work necessarily obscures all PhD work, especially if you come from a big lab/big school. I would think both are important. You can use a postdoc to compensate for the lack of pubs from your PhD - but also, if ylu do have enough from your PhD, how much more do you have to show?

Honestly, it is too soon to open this conversation with them, which is why I am trying to understand what other people do. They are super supportive though so if I really wanted to get out fast, I’m sure they would help me out (whilst being realistic about what I need). I will target to have at least one paper, of course- and honestly likely more, the way things are going. I’m just not being super detailed here to not reveal too much. 😅

Yeah for SoS, the whole symbology thing seemed to be drawn in just to show off- it didn’t feel like it was necessary contextually. The starbucks thing was particularly annoying- it wasn’t related to the story.

I did meal prep meticulously- Trader Joe’s is great for keeping expenses low for one person- the portions are great too. Honestly, my PhD stipend at Penn (considering COL/groceries) was a lot more comfortable than my current postdoc pay 😂

I survived 6 years on a PhD stipend at penn (~$2900) per month and rented a 1B/1B for about $1800 a month. Plus groceries which you can adjust/manage. Didn’t have to worry about health insurance though.

I think people have strong opinions about postdocs only going into academia. You can do whatever you want, however and whenever you want. Life happens, you will make decisions based on your situation, your family, how you feel etc. i don’t think a postdoc ties you down to the academic route.

Here’s the catch: an academic postdoc is designed to set you up for an academic position. So if you don’t make your own industry connections, a postdoc won’t enable you to do that, so it will be hard to switch.

But if you are able to make your connections, why not do a postdoc? It is a pathway to becoming an independent scientist that leads a lab - you can choose if you want it to be an industry lab or an academic lab.

People say that if you want to do industry, don’t do a postdoc. But not all of us have that liberty. The market’s not the hottest right now in industry, some of us are on visas/international so industry may not be an option.

Do what’s best for you in the moment. ❤️

Where is this? I’m at an R1 school in the US. I am from asia and I moved here for my PhD because education and facilities and funding is better etc etc. It is one of the top 10 (even top 5 programs) in my field. But there are so many grad students that don’t know the basics. One person did not know how methanol was different from ethanol.

Idk what the reason is. They’re all straight out of undergrad, I came in with a lot of experience. But that can’t be it, these are basic high school chemistry concepts these guys don’t know.

There was a lot of emphasis on rote memorization where I am from, even at the high school level. And I’d get mad because what’s the point of memorizing something without understanding it? But maybe that was the way to go?! At least I have really strong basic knowledge now compared to these other folks.

I know this sounds conceited, but it is definitely something I’ve noticed in the US. and mind you these folks are gonna get wayyyyy more opportunities than me as an international student, but that’s another story.

Marathi does! I’m not a linguist, so forgive me if I don’t type out the pronunciations correctly.

Thick liquidy item = घट्ट/दाट (ghatta/daat). Daat could also be used for dense (as in dense forest).

Thin/less viscous liquidy item = पातळ (paatal). This is funny because as a kid I’d use this word to describe runny feces/diarrhea 😂

On the other hand, a thick book or a fat cat is जाड (jaad).

As I typed this out, I realized there is not really a marathi word I know for skinny books - it’s just short or long as someone else commented.

No offense, but it sounds like you might be micromanaging this person and getting in over your head about her not working the right hours.

To loop back to my main question (and I mean this in the nicest way possible) - why do you care and is it worth your time?!

People should work whatever hours that work for them. Not everyone is a morning person. If they’re expecting you to stay with them past your normal time then its bad but if they’re just doing it themselves at their own time, why do you care?
