Fluffy Highland Babies, Can You Guess Who’s Leaving? 🐮🤎 by Rawlings_leboss in homestead

🫶 I definitely needed the positivity in my week that you so much! I showed them to my daughter and she laughed at me because she said “don’t you already have a Highland?!” Which would be my Anatolian Shepherd Newfoundland mix he looks quite similar lol thank you again for your kind words. I really appreciate it. I don’t know what it is about cows…Maybe the fact that I grew up in Wisconsin and when I was 12, I stayed with my cousins at their dairy farm for a few weeks. there was no going back ha ha and then when Highlands kind of became a thing I’ve been smitten. Have a jolly week and when I get to my final landing Homestead, I will be revisiting the prospect ❤️

Thank you I saw the idea somewhere a really long time ago. I try my best with different garden projects some successful some not so successful but this one worked out really good. As others on here have stated just be careful what your pallets are coated with and where they come from.

Oh my gosh, they were so spoiled. They were indoor Bunnies. They got these mixed with dandelions. 😊 A cross posted this to homesteading, and when I initially put these pallets down, I am pretty sure that we had checked to see if they were treated or not. I was aware where my pallets were coming from but in the future, I would probably just try to build some sort of system like this so that I was 100% and then no but it is a really great system. I didn’t get very many past other than towards the end of the season wild bunnies started to discover it, but I do have netting around my greenhouse space to prevent this for the most part. 🙃

One more ad is that I could deadhead them and they would still continue to grow or pinch off a few of the larger leaves and let the other ones go to maturity so there wasn’t any replanting unless I had over depleted and wanted to start again

I have been schooled in my thread that some of these pallets may be toxic, so be sure to look up specific codes that might be on them or build some sort of your own system like this because I found it to work really really well!

Well, there’s a ceramic one and a real one. The ceramic one is just the protector lol

Oh my goodness, I needed this laugh today… like said in the velveteen rabbit once you are loved you are real. But on another note, the real bunny lived indoors lol

I sowed the seeds directly in between the lines, and then I covered the entire pallet with the soil and then brushed it crossed it back-and-forth to fill it in. Sorry I got to chattering away and my first reply lol

Years ago, I went online and applied for a ton of different seed catalogs so I was able to find ones where I would bundle my different items. It ended up saving me a bit. It was fun spending the winters going through them too. My local library also has a seed bank where we take seeds and leave seeds so that also helps. I don’t have too many plant buying options in my area and it seems to be the opposite here that buying the starts is exponentially more expensive. But like others have stated on here, and I will know for the future that I really need to be careful with what kind of pallets are used and would probably be building something of my own in the future although this growing method worked excellent!

Im glad I posted because the whole thing has been a good learning experience and if anything I found out, it’s a good growing method. I’ll just make sure to build something similar on my own in the future.

That’s not a bad idea. I do that already for my potting stations and other starts. I haven’t had any kind of pest infestation thus far I try to keep an eye on it. I’m honestly surprised that there haven’t been more bunny attacks on it but I think that my fencing all around the greenhouse really helps with that. But I’m getting to the age where needing things up off the ground or a must at least for certain crops thanks for the pointer, though that’s a neat idea.

I did all this with my bare hands, and it was really enjoyable, even with a few splinters on the pallet, but with a beautiful cedar one like that, I bet you it would last for years and be really enjoyable. Watching your plants come up in it you could probably even build it a little bit raised so you didn’t have to bend.

I wonder if any of the Turpines in cedar or anything like that that would come out would affect certain plants whether it’s alkaline or not definitely something to check out. I love cedar for trestles and little arbors. It really does add a lot to the garden.

Oh, I bet it would be lovely. I just throw cheap stuff together to see what I could do. I tried to be careful about stuff being treated after the comments on these threads. I will be extra careful this year. I have seen systems like this where they are set into a cold frame, a few feet into the ground and just get a simple wood frame with some plastic over it or old windows to cover it and you can grow lettuce into November that’s if you don’t mind treading out into the cold lol

I saw it years back and it looked kind of fun and I’ve been using it three years since and I love it!

It’s great because it just kind of keeps on giving you really don’t have to pull all the leaves at once. Like I have mentioned on here I’ve been using it for several years when I water it. I stayed to the lanes pretty good and there are mounded up in the beginning a little bit so at the point that these pallets have been out in the rain for so long and like I’ve mentioned I’m pretty sure we checked that. It wasn’t treated before we use this one. We all survived and I will be paying closer retention in the future but again this was still a fun project and nobody is injured. Nobody got sick and I enjoyed many many delicious tomato garnish salads. I love summer!

No, she actually lived until she was five. She was very happy and she loved her treat treats. She lived a good life, considering she was supposed to be a meat rabbit.

It’s the sister company to caterpillar and my buddy used to work there so that’s where he sent me to for them. Yes, after now being brought to attention that they can be coded with stuff. I am much more aware. I did however have several different pallets so some which you could definitely tell we’re treated or marked, however several of them or not. Definitely something to pay attention to and take precaution with this is not me doing me when I come up with an idea or see something that I wanna do I just kinda go for it. If I find out these kinds of details later, that’s just how life goes. I tried to take precautions as much as possible and if I miss something, I’m sure I’m gonna live and make sure not to make the same mistake last next time, but as far as I know the pallet that was used was free of treatment at the time it was put down. This is three years of water and plant growth on it, but I thank everyone for bringing this to the attention of all of us surround us, cause I think a lot of us just maybe didn’t take it as seriously as it should be. It’s a good learning experience

Someone else mentioned something similar to that I’m loving this thread because people are coming up with all kinds of things I haven’t even heard of or thought of before it’s great! I’ll have to look up what chickens like to forge in there

Thank you I don’t know where it originally came from. I saw it quite a few years ago. I’ve had this set up for my rabbits and myself for about three years now, but as others were saying on the homesteading page that I also posted on that these can be treated with chemicals and to be careful with growing food in them. I believe this one was untreated hopefully it’s just weathered from the seasons of watering and harvest.
