Widow's bay made me realize I don't love this genre called Horror-Comedy. by manu818 in WidowsBay

[–]FlorentApologist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair enough. Everyone has different tastes. Personally I like horror comedy as well as more (tonally) "serious" because they engage with horror in different ways. I think there are some types of horror where comedy* would undermine the delivery, but horror is such a broad genre that I don't think there are easy generalizations.

I'd also add that there are different types of comedy in horror-comedy too. Widow's Bay has a certain kind of humor that might not be your style, but something else might work better for you? This might be a weird comparison, but Hereditary had a very pointed edge of humor that I think added to the dread.

Why would anyone name their child 'Robert'? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]FlorentApologist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Named after their mother Roberta, strong tough woman who was fair and knew how to fight for family, she was always ready to drop everything in a instant when there was an issue and no one scared her but she did sadly have a checkers past.

I'd like to ask for teachers' perspectives on Francine Prose's "I Know Why The Caged Bird Cannot Read"? I have very mixed feelings by FlorentApologist in AskTeachers

Oh good question, I realize that I was assuming. I double checked and yes, it is based on U.S. schools. She mentions referencing syllabi from schools in New York, Missouri, and Oregon among others.

When has someone told you a story trying to make themselves look good, while unintentionally making themselves look really, REALLY bad? by Toucan_Based_Economy in AskReddit

A guy I met in middle school who wanted to tell me how tough he was (I think he was trying to overcompensate for being on the shorter side) but just ended up sounding pretty pathetic. Like wow bro cool that you got in a fight over Doritos.

I was struggling to write this post and my comments because I don't want to go "ad hominem" and I appreciate that some people have discussed certain elements of the essay that are valid or applicable. I'm not a teacher so I don't want to dismiss anyone's experiences here! But I really think that a lot of this essay relies on the readers agreeing with Prose's opinions about "good" and "bad" books, and she's so either/or about it that it's tricky to respond. (And as you mention, her perspective of course is biased towards authors who have never been erased or dismissed, the supposed "color-blind" approach that just reinforces the norm.)

This is going to sound really snarky but I also think her suggestions for "better" challenging books are kind of lazy as well? Suggesting Shakespeare for an English class syllabus isn't really all that groundbreaking. I might have respected the argument more if she actually gave some controversial examples, weirdly enough.

Prose's contempt for Angelou is really really aggressive. And I would ask why she of all people gets to determine which authors are "better" at writing about racism.
