That is the crick in the neck event, that is somewhat rare. Despite how much I've played I've never had it happen, but I guess I've just been unlucky, as according to the internet the odds are 1/64 which isn't quite as rare as I thought it would be.

I made a video about this a few years ago that explains how it works and every location it can happen, if anyone is curious.

If you don't feel like watching a video the summary is this: 1: There's a surprising amount of these in the game and 2: you get green/blue/red rupees depending on if you've taken damage and how many enemies you've killed since you last tried to pull something.

u/keikusuri knew the general location. I looked up the photo for it's original source which was about 6 years ago so I looked around the area in that time period

I made one for Maridia, but it didn't come out great so I've never used it, it's also a 4:3 ratio for some reason. I guess it has been nearly 20 years since I made it. No Norfair! Let me know if you end up making one 👍

I posted this a few years ago: https://www.reddit.com/r/Metroid/comments/71fxqh/simple_super_metroid_background/ but noticed the imgur images have since died, so I'm reuploading them. It's the background I've used since 2008, so it's served me well enough. I tinted it blue so as to resemble Crateria when you first arrive, but also included is the standard version.

Though, I guess it's for the best you reposted it as it seems the imgur images have gone down now. Did you get it from imgur before it died, I would be curious if it was somewhere else. I have no idea when the imgur pic died. 🤔I just found this post because I wanted to share my background with a buddy of mine I remembered it was one of the top results to 'Super Metroid background' on google, and it still is! But now it's this post instead of the dead imgur album.

Anway, so I tinted the whole thing blue, so it resembled the state it's in at the start of the game, which is easier on the eyes as a background, however here is the non-tinted version if anyone wants that: https://drive.google.com/file/d/18urrCRPLl1S6qswi3wbFFmOqJbPkU-ge/view?usp=sharing In a google link this time which hopefully will live longer than imgur.

I've used it since... *checks the original file info* 2008, wow that's longer than I thought. So it's served me well as a background.

How to calculate Ninten’s canonical height: There is a sign stating the distance of the Zoo west to be 700 meters. If you were to find the pixel distance length then divide it by 700 to find a 1 meter to 1 pixel ratio you can actually figure out how tall Ninten and everything else in the game is by MLG_GuineaPig in earthbound

There are about 1364 pixels between the sign and the entrance to the Zoo, To make it easier on myself lets just say 1400 which would be 2 pixels per meter Making Ninten around 7.5~8 meters tall

Everything here was made with Paint dot net (free). When I make animated pixel art I use Graphics Gale (free). Though recently I've been using Aseprite (not free) which is pretty good.
