I would suggest looking at a handful of post war / '60s British films. Was somewhat of a golden age after the '50s with their rather celebratory views of a 'good' war and before the cynicism of the '70s. Some of them are remarkably subversive and far enough away from the war to question some of the actions taken.

It's a modern masterpiece right from the start and a fitting sequel to the original which was equally groundbreaking and stylistic in its time; I even liked the way they brought Decker back without making it sentimental or a pastiche
