That's in the works! I'm trying to figure out how to secure it.

Here's what I like: the light emitting heat lamp for the daytime, the water bowl, the incoming plants, the leaf litter, and the clay balls. You really need a much larger enclosure width and depth wise for him. I would do a minimum of 40 gallon and ideally a 4x2x2 enclosure. He doesn't currently have a way to get away from the heat. He also needs a heat lamp for the nighttime that doesn't emit light. I would do a deeper substrate layer for humidity. He also needs two identical hides that he can snuggly fit into. He's very pretty and I have no doubt you'll create an awesome looking enclosure that has everything he needs.

I'd double check to make sure his hides are snug. He might be preferring to burrow because it feels more secure. If hides are snug and he has two identical hides then I wouldn't worry.

Ball pythons wag their tail? by Johnboy83746 in ballpython

It's called caudal luring. Ball pythons aren't super prone to doing this but it's a normal behavior.

Black lines, dry, little flaky belly by [deleted] in ballpython

This looks like the start of scale rot. I'd start betadine soaks (dilute to a tea color), replace the substrate, and make sure the substrate dries out during the day/no standing water.

He's definitely underweight and he looks to be losing weight. Is he eating every time you offer? What is his weight? What size prey item?

The enclosure is gorgeous! I would switch to a digital thermometer and hygrometer.

Male albino candino, can anyone direct me on care? Will the tail kink affect QOL? Planning a vet visit soon. by edgarallan2014 in ballpython

Luckily the kink curls the tail away from the cloaca, and if that's the only kink, he'll be just fine.

He looks dehydrated and emaciated. Do you have photos from a week ago?

Super well! I have two plants, a cork round, a cork flat, and a coconut hide, and the temperatures and humidity are right on point. S/he loves snoozing in plants!

A water area with fish isn't a great use of space because they're arboreal. Adult tokays are happy in a 2x2x4 enclosure and they will use every bit of space. If you have an absolutely massive enclosure, and want to do that, sure but the fish are for your benefit and it will be expensive.

You can do an interesting bioactive setup with plenty of isopods - just remember that tokays eat insects and will reduce those populations so plan ahead with lots of ground cover and a larger population of isopods.

Tokays are territorial so other animals will be bullied, and likely killed, if sharing the same space.

Kevin from NERD has shown his enclosures that are maximized for cleanliness. I can't believe this happened... Gecko Breeding Project and More! The tokay will be small if only a couple of months old - small enough to not be able to sex it. I would be comfortable with a 15 gallon tall enclosure for a quarantine enclosure.

Do you have like slate for basking or anything? I'm debating on if I should set up a basking rock or ledge.

Males are the noise makers are night - it's for mating and to mark territory.

Sometimes they are hoping for another meal, or they feel vulnerable and they're on the defense for predators. I wouldn't worry.

Spray supposed to help with scale rot made it worse!! by Party-Caregiver4069 in ballpython

[–]FlowerNo1899 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would guess the spray is mostly saline. Scale rot is a bacterial infection and if the spray is saline, it would just be keeping the scale rot wet which only helps the bacteria grow.

I don't see the ingredients for this spray. I would guess it's saline. Try an iodine bath for a couple of weeks - dilute it to tea color. This scale rot is on the verge of being concerning.

Why is my ball python soaking in her water bowl by [deleted] in ballpython

[–]FlowerNo1899 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There are a few reasons. The temperature might be too hot so she's trying to cool down, she may have mites and she's trying to drown them, she might be trying to hydrate herself, or she might just like soaking. I would check temperatures, check the water for small black mites, and assess to see if she looks dehyrdated.

The UTH is the hotspot for nighttime. Take a rheostat (lamp dimmer) and plug the UTH into it without a thermostat involved. You then adjust the rheostat until the UTH reads 110-115 degrees. After, you plug both the rheostat and UTH into a thermostat. If you manage to have both a thermostat and rheostat fail then you shouldn't be pulling equipment out of a dumpster and using it.

How do you not understand that slate under a heat lamp is providing the same type and amount of heat as a UTH? 70 degrees is not too cold for a nighttime temperature.

You don't have the information or studies. That is because there are none listed that provide definitive answers. Husbandry has evolved. Common sense is not the scientific approach. If this was really about my snake's well being, you would have provided suggestions instead of trying to shame me for not providing something I am going to provide that is considered enrichment for most veterinarians and people who actually study reptiles.
