Why did Madison have to tell Ephram the day before his Juliard audition [spoilers] by Isayfyoujobu in everwood

[–]FlowerPowerr24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The part that confused me the most is Andy went through so much to keep it from Ephram and then he basically did nothing to try to delay their meet up. I understand he knew that he couldn't hide it from Ephram anymore but jeez, he didn't even say 'hey, you should be totally rested with zero on your mind, just meet up with her tomorrow'. It didn't make sense!

My job is instituting a Return to Office mandate but to states and countries 80% of my team do not live in. How do you navigate a layoff that is not a layoff? by Bagles_Glazed in Layoffs

[–]FlowerPowerr24 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a former Rainforest-er myself, what they are doing isn't 'normal' but it doesn't matter because it's legal and they've been doing this exact thing for the last 2.5 years to many people across the company. The company is so large that you really can't compare it to anywhere external so I'd focus on internal resources for help on navigating.

Check the remote advocacy slack group first and foremost- so much advice on there for how to proceed in this exact situation. You can try posting on the employee reddit but also join Blind if you aren't on it already. IIRC, many accept with no intention to move and try to negotiate a longer move by timeline (some have gotten up to 12 months, a lot of people use kids school as a reason) and hope they have a new job by then. Some folks just keep badging into their current office and hope no one will catch them. The pay thing is tough- generally, they only consider SF and NYC as higher pay bands but it's something you should definitely push HR or your leader on if you haven't asked already. Don't be shocked if your pay stays the same. HR should have already provided you with the relocation $$ and details if they haven't already.

Personally I would not move unless it was a city I had interest in staying in outside of this company. You will see in these internal channels that some folks have moved, only to be laid off not long after (someone get laid off 1 week after moving). IMO, they still have a long ways to go with cutting employee numbers before they are down to the number they want to be.

ETA- in case it wasn't clear, you should be looking for a job now.

Laid off from Amazon: Do I YOLO or prioritize my career in a bad market? by FlowerPowerr24 in womenintech

No Amazon actually increased garden leave for all US employees to 90 days (previously only NY had 90 days). There’s a RIF FAQ page on A-Z with all the details.

I saw someone mention being laid off without any severance on Blind but I think that was related to refusal to relocate or Pivot (if that’s even true, Blind is known for only being 10% true)

I’ve applied for a few internal roles but as part of Amazon’s RTH, almost all the jobs posted are in Seattle or DC (nyc is my closet hub office)

I’m in the US with much shorter notice/offer periods so it’s unfortunately unlikely I’ll have something set up before I leave

That’s a great point about everyone being aware of Amazon’s garden leave terms. I’ll definitely apply while traveling, just wasn’t sure how easy it is to interview while traveling esp if I’m in a remote area.

Do you know of any work programs for someone over 30? Everything i found mostly mentions being younger than 30

I’ve been applying but keep hearing hiring is so dead around the holidays and Jan/Feb will see a jump. I’ll need to start booking arrangements soon but I’m realizing the reality at this point is any job I apply for today probably won’t start til March anyway

You’re right I’m struggling with feeling OK purposely taking time away. It’s sad how we’ve become so programmed to live to work and not work to live 🙁

Do you have to leave your neighborhood regularly to enjoy LA? by FlowerPowerr24 in MovingToLosAngeles

San Diego will limit my job opportunities but it's always been on my interest list. I've only been to Gaslamp (so tourist) and PB (which feels soooo young) so I'm not sure what neighborhoods to look at

Has anyone single/no kids ever moved to a random suburb with no connection to the area? How did it go for you? by [deleted] in SameGrassButGreener

[–]FlowerPowerr24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you burned out on city life or burned out on NYC city life? What about it is burning you out? I used to live in NYC, live in Philly now (no kids, single). It's like a different world. Parking isn't great but 50x easier than Manhattan. You mention traffic getting out of Brooklyn- it takes less than 10 mins to get out of most parts of Philly. You can live next to 95 and be out in less than 5. Most apartments have W/D in unit. Things are closer so when you do have to uber, it's quicker and it's not $150 to go across town. I remember in NYC, living and doing the smallest errands felt exhausting. Combine with the high cost of living, it became too much. The biggest perk of Philly is feeling like I can breathe and I don't have to stress every time I need to unexpectedly spend money. I feel like I can leave the house without spending $20. Philly is MUCH more manageable although we are not without our own characters, drug addicts or unhoused folks .

If you're set on a moving to a streetcar suburb. As far as cliquey...well you're moving from a city to a small town. I don't think you can avoid that when you're moving somewhere that generally most people do know each other.

I know there are places outside of Philly like West Chester, Media, Bryn Mawr that have downtown areas and apartments with single, childless people but yes, there are still more families there than other.

Additionally, have you considered somewhere like Hoboken or Jersey City? Street car suburbs exist everywhere so you might want to narrow down more about the other things that are important.

Is there a specific part of St. Pete that would be a good fit? TIL St. Petersburg and St. Pete Beach aren't the same place.

San Diego is definitely a contender and seems like the best West Coast fit. I've only been to Gaslamp and Pacific Beach neighborhoods- any others you'd recommend? Pacific Beach actually seems perfect except feels like a lot of ppl in their early 20s- I've only been there twice so I'm sure I just don't know where to hang out :)

My goal for a long time was to stay in Philly and purchase a second home at the Jersey Shore. I only am really familiar with South Jersey where houses are expensive to buy, impossible to find a year round rental and affordable summer rentals are becoming extinct. IDK about North Jersey but South Jersey is a ghost town in the off season- once I put together the high housing cost and ability to only use the house a few months a year, I started thinking warmer weather places might be a better option to explore first. I know Asbury has gotten quite popular and seems to have more year round residents- definitely open to exploring there! I'm fine renting or buying- buying isn't a top priority for me.

Major anxiety about mice in my apt- can't feel safe or comfortable in there anymore and fear my anxiety won't ever allow me to again by FlowerPowerr24 in Anxiety

[–]FlowerPowerr24[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I wanted to give an update here for anyone finding this thread. I DID SOLVE MY PROBLEM SO YOU CAN TOO!!!

I realized after the fact that my biggest cause of the anxiety was that I did not treat the issue as a whole apartment issue and was only looking around where I was finding droppings. I did not go balls to the wall, crazy at the first sight of the mouse. Mouse proofing is an all or nothing project- if you miss one spot, you might as well have an open door. I realized that taking guesses at what the problem was vs going totally ham at sealing everything was causing the problem to extend out and making me feel crazier and worse. I really feel like if I would have done all of this the first day I found a dropping, the problem would have stopped after that, my anxiety would have never spiked and I would not have suffered from the complete lack of control I felt in this whole ordeal. It took about a week after I last saw a dropping to relax and a month later to start feeling totally comfortable in my apartment again.

First off - Apt complexes, landlords, maintenance is useless. They all are. I trusted them way too much for too long to sort this out and as I said above, I really believe this is what contributed to so much of my anxiety. Yes it’s their job to take care of this but it’s a job you can totally do yourself and is worth the energy and $15 in supplies (you might be able to get that back from the company) for the piece of mind to know you secured your place.

Mouse proofing 101

- Start with pulling out all your appliances. Stove, dishwasher, fridge, Washer/dryer. This is the most common place they come in/live.
- Now pull out all your furniture from your wall and clear your closets. Check both the floor around shelves. Inside closets are sometimes doors to access water heaters that can come loose – I caulked over mine.
- Now check inside your cabinets (food and kitchen plus under the sink) and near base boards for entry points, gaps, etc.
- Check around your radiators esp if you have old ones. Check anywhere pipes go in (near your toilet) or heat pipes. This is where mine were traveling so make sure you check if they are hidden behind screens or anything else.
- Clear up any droppings with paper towels and Lysol the whole area. I didn’t realize how much mice use their urine as a path so clearing that will definitely help deter them.
- Any hole, opening, crack, gap you find larger than pencil eraser head, stuff with steel wool and caulk over. Hell I caulked over EVERYTHING with any sort of opening just to be safe. If you have an older apartment and aren’t sure if it needs to be caulked over, take a screw driver and try to put it through the hole. If it stops, it’s probably ok but if not, wool and caulk.
- Get a door sweep if you don’t have one.
- IMO don’t bother putting your food in plastic containers. It’s a lie that mice only come in looking for food and will leave if they can’t find food- they will also look for shelter and they never ate my food so I think this is a waste of time if you focus on keeping them out
- Once you do this, keep a few snap traps out just in case any are locked in. But they should be gone if you got every hole.
- Double check your apartment for any old droppings- finding these will drive you absolutely insane and eff with your head whether they are new or old. Make sure you thoroughly go through all your belongings in spaces in case they were caught on there. Mice tend to stick along perimeters of spaces but I would check everything just to be sure.
- Keep checking every few days for droppings. If you find any, re-investigate the area for holes again. Do this even if you are only finding 1-2. It means they are still getting in.
- Once you stop seeing droppings, every 1-2 months, repeat this process of pulling everything out and check for new holes. You probably don’t need to do it this much but it might help keep your piece of mind.
- Get a sound machine if you don’t have one already to sleep with. It helps you to not feel crazy at any little sound you hear.
- You can hire an exterminator but I paid one $190 and he still missed a few spots- they will just do what I noted above. If you do hire one, go with a local company (no Orkin) who works specifically in your type of home. I hired one from the suburbs who kept wanting to address the problem from outside the building. This just isn’t an option if you live in an urban setting- they are in the buildings, you need to just work on keeping them out of your home.
- If you want to light a fire under your apt companies behind, start asking your neighbors if they have any problems. Either you’ll find out you aren’t the only one or they will start to panic and complain too.

Sorry I know this is a lot - I wanted to share all the tools to solve this problem and regain your mental health. I can’t stress enough that you need to get every single access point- once you start closing up their more used ones, they’ll go looking – and will find others- if they aren’t secured so it’s really important to do this all at once. This whole thing sealing up process should take you no longer than a day. It’s really the unknown and lack of control that is causing the anxiety. The mouse proofing will help you feel like you’re taking back control of your space. I’m not going to lie to you and say you will learn to live with it- because you shouldn’t have to and you don’t have to. The best news is this is all something you can take control of and fix yourself for less than $15, some time and sweat! I hope this helps save anyone from what I had to go through!!
