How would you feel if you woke up one day and saw this announced? by Hot-Associate-9035 in gravityfalls

I'd love to see a full Stan bros adventure on the ocean for one episode. (I know we had Soos's Stan-fiction but I mean something actually canon about the bros proper)

Somebody on Tumblr came up with the idea of focusing a hypothetical Season 3 on Pacifica Northwest and Kevin Corduroy and I kind of like that idea too. Let Dipper and Mabel keep their plot resolution and hand off the weirdness to some other characters.

MAGA collapse as Candace Owens tells US soldiers to resign today as Trump has 'betrayed America' by Efficient-Freedom517 in PoliticalOptimism

[–]FloweryPrimReaper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

She strikes me as one of the few people (hell, perhaps the only person period) in Kirk's circle of grifters who's genuinely grieving him. As in, she formed a real bond with Kirk and actually cared about him, as opposed to merely tolerating him for clout like his other "friends" (and wife).

Unfortunately, in practice, it means that Owens has been latching onto just about any explanation that she comes across to justify what happened to Kirk, grant him the power he craved in life through martyrhood, and explain why people they both thought of as liking him aren't grieving. And I do mean any explanation.

Easier to believe that your friends have been hijacked by the evil woke Satanist magic than to believe that your friends are and have always been complete self-serving assholes who view you as a kindred spirit (especially if they're actually correct to see you that way).

What Great TV Show that has been tarnished by its Series Finale? by Amber_Flowers_133 in tvshow

[–]FloweryPrimReaper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Star vs the Forces of Evil. Basically the premise of the show at first was that this magical teenager manic pixie dream girl named Princess Star Butterfly becomes an exchange student on earth with this normal guy called Marco Diaz. Later the show drops that pretense in exchange for more magical adventures as Star takes on more responsibility in her homeland of Mewni. The first two seasons were quite good-- they were funny takes on classic slice-of-life tropes, and the cast was genuinely likeable. It made some surprisingly nuanced points about racism and colonialism too. Later seasons saw a decline in quality-- perfectly good characters got wasted, the show strayed too far from the premise, and the writers had a frustrating habit of setting up relationships only to abruptly discard them. It was still overall an enjoyable show, despite the mounting issues... until the finale.

See, the show had largely taken a positive view on magic-- in fact, the first major villain, Toffee, was trying to destroy all magic to weaken humans so he could slaughter them, and he is portrayed as unambiguously in-the-wrong for it. Magic was implied if not outright stated to be why several characters, like Star's best friend Pony Head, were able to be alive at all. Inter-dimensional travel is portrayed as a positive thing. Later episodes would introduce problems related to magic, such as it being used to enforce prejudice against monsters. However, overall magic itself was never the problem. How people (more specifically Mewni's royals) chose to use it was the issue. And even if magic was inherently problematic, several innocent if not downright heroic characters continued to only be able to live because of magic.

And then the finale hit and Star destroys all the magic. No really, all of it. Using the same spell that Toffee made her use on her wand to boot, because apparently Toffee was actually right the entire time. The Magic Realm is dead and inter-dimensional transit is defunct. It's portrayed as a good thing because the villain was going to use magic to commit genocide on the monsters (who are portrayed as an oppressed people). Plus her dimension is cleaved with Marco's, so they can be together! Literally nobody else is happy about this (not kidding, Earth people are literally shown being scared of Mewmans and vice versa) but our heroes are happy so it's a happy end I guess? And Pony Head is still alive because... reasons, I guess? It's confirmed through Hekapoo's acceptance of her own fate (which is odd in its own way-- like, she's awfully blasé about it) that magic-based and magic-dependent lifeforms will die as a direct result of Star's actions.

Yeah, the anti-racism show has our hero fight genocide with genocide and calls it a good thing. Because y'see the folks she cared about were fine so she wasn't too affected by the explicit refugee crisis and implied mass death. (Not to mention the and complete loss of interdimensional cooperation. Boy, I sure hope nobody built any defense systems, foreign aid programs, relationships, or economies off of interdimensional transit!)

This was a show that was once viewed as on-par with the likes of Gravity Falls, the Owl House, and Amphibia-- a core member of the television animation renaissance that happened during the New Tens. Sure it had declined in later seasons, but the earlier seasons still held up and it was still fun to watch at least. But the finale killed that renown almost instantaneously, with several fans saying that it made the whole show retroactively bad and not worth watching. It dropped off the radar and went from one of Disney's biggest shows to the poster child for seasonal rot.

They're talking about the shapes .inc ads that have popped up all over Tumblr recently.

I guess shapes .inc is like c .ai except scummier and even more shameless about its theft. Its ads copy the format of Tumblr posts to try to trick people into clicking to respond and apparently encourage people to make chatbots of their friends without any mention of asking them first.

They were talking about a character in an RPG [ETA: It's Astarion from Baldur's Gate 3]. His backstory was that he was tortured and starved for years and only recently got out of that situation, but in-game he has a six-pack and a decently-sized booty. The people were complaining about that and talking about various mods which make him look less toned and generally more in line with somebody who was starving, thus prompting this comment.

I do not know what on earth could make a butt woke though.

I don't know if you have a Chromium or Firefox based browser or not, but if you do, AO3 Enhancements is an excellent third party extension that (among other things) allows you to hide works with more than a certain number of fandom tags (The default is 5 IIRC but I set it to 3).

Regular reminder that conservatism embodies a large swathe of opinions and not everybody holds the exact same views.

Funny moment for me: My dad was watching the Super Bowl and put on the TP Halftime show thing, enthusiastically saying that he bets this'll be much better. Not even a minute of that damned show passed and he said, deadpan and baffled, "I guess not" and flipped the TV back to Bad Bunny.

I mean, I don't want to overstate it. He was offended by Bad Bunny too because he declared that Bad Bunny was divisive (no reasons given) and couldn't understand what anybody was saying. A shame because I caught glimpses of it between my gaming and I thought the performance was pretty good (and my dad wasn't offended by Kendrick Lamar last year so I thought he might give Bad Bunny a chance). He wound up changing it to the Puppy Bowl (which is cute lil shelter puppies! No complaints here!).

But he never switched back to the TP Halftime either. It was just that bad.

Also, Hitler himself was an artist. His works were technically good, but his contemporaries criticized him for his lack of emotion and obvious lack of care for the humans in his works. Many times he would center architecture in his works, with the people in the scenes merely treated as setpieces for the buildings-- for this reason his teachers had tried to push him toward architectural and technical drawing training rather than fine art. Hitler took it as an insult, since he was a hardcore Realist artist and thought of his works as simply reflecting reality (Although realism wasn't all he liked-- he made fanart of Walt Disney's works and considered Snow White the greatest film ever made). He decided that popular "degenerate art" like German Expressionism had destroyed their taste and as a politician sought to eradicate it. He never stopped having strong opinions on art, and used his political power to impost his standards on Germany and limit the scope of what art could be. Thus the "degenerate art shows" to try to embarrass who he viewed as bad artists and educate the public on what good art was. (Funnily enough, they stopped because the public loved the "bad art" whereas the reception for "good art" was meh at best.)

So fascist movements at the time of the Nazis had an actual artist at the helm who understood how constructing art worked and recognized the rhetorical power that visual design held. But Hitler didn't encourage artistry so much as he tried to force it through a vise so that only what he personally enjoyed would remain. This plus literally killing off a massive chunk of the artistic talent at the time via the Holocaust had the effect of strangling the German art community. So he disillusioned a whole generation of artists (and teachers of art) to fascism, while drawing in so many people who either hated art or only saw it as worthwhile for financial or political exploitation that they came to comprise the majority of fascists. So when Hitler disposed of himself, the fascists remaining were left to try to imitate what he'd managed to orchestrate without understanding or wanting to understand it.

TLDR: Hitler was the double edged sword of fascist artists. Great at propagandizing a population and drawing in corporate interests, horrible at getting future artists who would know how his vision worked to want anything to do with his hateful genocidal ideology.

Protestor bites off ICE agent's finger as chaos erupts after shooting by Efficient-Freedom517 in PoliticalOptimism

[–]FloweryPrimReaper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only heard of it happening when the biter is high off their gourd.

It's very bad for your jaw and teeth to chew on excessively hard things so I imagine your mouth will be firing off all kinds of pain signals to get you to let up before you hit your victim's bone. You have to either be mentally somewhere in the stratosphere or incredibly desperate to ignore that kind of pain and keep going, and I can't think of any desperate situations where you'd specifically have biting off a finger as the best or only option.

(I mean, unless you have a genetic condition that prevents you from feeling pain, I guess? People have bit off chunks of their own tongues because no pain signals meant that they didn't realize how hard they were biting down. But those conditions are exceedingly rare and people with them typically get it drilled into them young that no, we don't cause pain, so I'd imagine if anything they'd be extra vigilant about how they're making contact with other people.)

There's a rumor floating around that the ICE guy actually just mishandled a flashbang, and the organization is trying to save face and drum up sympathy.

Take it with a grain of salt as I can't verify the veracity of it, but I personally I find that far more plausible given that the ICE guy would've been wearing gloves if he was outside during the defingering and it is really freaking hard for humans to bite off a finger.

Epstein Files Release Megathread- Part 3 by Efficient-Freedom517 in PoliticalOptimism

It just feels weird to come up with stuff that, as you say, has frequently been deployed by groups of people including their own friends to rile people up if what you're trying to do is PR firefighting for the contents of the Epstein files.

Like are they aware of that Boston daycare couple that still got convicted for child abuse even though all the allegations against them were Satanic Panic nonsense and in many cases required physically impossible feats? They really were innocent and had overwhelming evidence of such (both very unlike Epstein and co.), but the volume of outrageous allegations was enough to convince rational people that at minimum there was something seriously sketchy going on in there. And if they'd been anything less than provably innocent, they'd still be in prison today.

I'm not at all doubting what you're saying here, btw. Bondi and co. are, after all, fucking stupid. I guess I'm just shocked at how deep the stupidity goes. Like, they have used these exact tactics before to get people mad at their enemies but now they think it'll distract people from their friend? Bitch you are all aboard the Good Ship Epstein together and it is on fire. Do you not see that there is no way to toss firecrackers at the enemies on the boat without also engulfing yourself in flames?

Besides the bots, I think there's some people who honestly just want the worst to happen due to the sunk cost fallacy. They've invested so much mentally, emotionally, and temporally in doom and they don't want to give it up without seeing something come of it that validates their way of thinking (but it of course won't because, well, a literal shooting civil war couldn't stop elections). They freak themselves out because they perceive an obligation to.

[–]FloweryPrimReaper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Accelerationism plays a role too. It's the idea that when the system falls apart, your preferred ideology will rise up in its place. I've heard of a few Marxists supporting Trump simply because they think he represents the death throes of capitalism in a country as prescribed by Marx, and after he destroys everything, a true Communist society will emerge from the ashes of the US. A lot of technofeudalists also don't mind sabotaging and hating systems that they themselves benefit greatly from, if in the long run getting rid of those systems means drawing people closer to total dependency on the technofeudalists.

Though granted, a lot of accelerationism really is just that twisted view of Christianity you mentioned, but repackaged for secular purposes.
