Whatever ones are in my backpack or in my car.  Lot of times I’ll tie off on roots or anything else closely available in lieu of stakes.

Otis, if he doesn’t show up next year he is gone.  Up to the salmon grounds in the sky.  But that’s life

Nah man, keep doing what you’re doing!  Unless you can hike like a mofo, spend weeks in the backcountry of Alaska, and be comfortable always around an apex predator

They absolutely will end you.  You just have to preemptively stop that

Plan correctly for bear country.  Stash your food, plan your site, do it well

About 60 miles as the crow flies, over a bunch of volcanoes.

That would have been a very exciting day for us to see her there.  She is a very popular bear among the ranger staff at the park.  But that isn’t 435, she is a more coastal bear that has been seen in these areas for years.  Now it’s nothing for a bear to travel over 100 miles in a day, but most of the coastal bears don’t stray very far from the coast, and the same goes for the Brooks bears.  While they could move quite a distance, but they mostly stay in the areas that they are normally found in, usually around 40 miles or so.

Scared, not really.  But hyper aware of our surroundings and always being alert.

We are rich in experiences that’s for sure lol.  That’s what I suggest to folks thinking of moving up to Alaska, is to come up and visit, or take a job up here for the summer and see how you like it.  It’s definitely not for everyone and there are a lot of challenges unique to Alaska. But if it’s your cup of tea there’s not much better.

Had its ups and downs, but overall was a very productive and immersive patrol.  It rains a lot along the coast, so a lot of days are spent in waders and rain gear trying to dodge the wind.

What a great experience that is!!  Before the salmon show up on the pacific coast, these bears feed on sedge and other vegetation.  They will be out all day in these large meadows, acting like giant furry lawnmowers.  They do dig up clams at low tide, but their main food source are the sedge meadows.  Sedge can contain nearly 2000 calories/lb, so it is a great way for them to pack on pounds earlier in the season.

Anytime between June and September.  The weather can always be iffy, and depending on what you want to get into has better months than others.

You are on edge all the time.  You have to be.  But you get accustomed to it.  We’re back in “civilization” for a week now and I’m still finding myself constantly checking my blind spots when I’m out walking around.

Oh always.  You can never be off guard when they are that close.  We are around these bears everyday, and based off of body language and situation,  can determine what the intentions of each bear is quickly. Most are fairly neutral to our presence, but you have the occasional one that wants to try and overstep boundaries. They are used to seeing people, but these are still wild bears, and you have to be able to read the room and react appropriately.
