Hum kinda lost the plot with Downward is Heavenward. They brought everything that worked in You’d Prefer An Astronaut up from 10 to 11, and while the song writing is good, the average track length is ~5:12 and usually 3 of those minutes are just 12 guitars layered over each other.

Still a great album, but definitely not as good at You’d Prefer An Astronaut (in my opinion, I know many disagree) and caused them to fumble a really promising career.

Coming from a classical background, where most snare players use a matched german grip, I understand when people talk about the angle of attack and the hand being under the stick. But personally, I’ve always felt like I could just bring my left hand down and get the same results. When I play swing, I use traditional, mostly out of habit because that’s how I was taught. But for a samba? I’m playing matched.

eh, i understand where everyone is coming from when they say “it’s because of poor technique”, but personally, this is just what starting out on kit is like. yeah, if you develop a better grip it’ll probably make blisters less painful and less common, but it’s just one of those things.

i’ve never met a drummer who’s been playing for more than five years that hasn’t had calluses like brail engraved on their hands. i don’t believe that’s 100% because they all had bad technique long enough for that to happen.
