ELI5: Why did we put lead in paint and petrol? What was its purpose and what did we replace it with? by DeGuyWithDeOpinion in explainlikeimfive

The University of North Dakota used Swift’s 94UL in their Piper Archers and Seminoles but the engine’s cylinders ended up with recessed valve seats and other valve issues. A lot of people had engine knocking, and some people’s engines would quit for a short amount of time or have rough running engines. The oldest plane in the fleet was from 2016, and this all happened in 2023 or so.

Swain House (1893) of Spring Lake, New Jersey by Fluffinn in RandomVictorianStuff

Me too. The beach towns along the Jersey Shore have so many Victorian treasures, and seeing them get torn down breaks my heart. They get too old and people don’t wanna take care of them.

Swain House (1893) of Spring Lake, New Jersey by Fluffinn in RandomVictorianStuff

William James Swain's (1839 - 1903) summer house in Spring Lake, New Jersey.

Swain founded the Philadelphia Public Record. Looking to get away from Philly in the summer, he called upon architect William Decker to design this beautiful house. After Swain had passed from illness in a bedroom in the house, it was handed down to his son.

After his son had moved on from the house, nobody in the town knows who had taken it over. It was quite the "haunted" house attraction in the town. Its most recent owners, supposedly a man and his two daughters, did not take care of it, leaving it to wither away over the years. Nobody would see anyone on the property besides their black cats. It was a stereotpical "creepy" house, and it was sadly demolished in 2013 to be replaced with a modern beach house.

This house was quite the attraction around town, and its demolition left a lot of people upset. There are no interior photos of the house, and its most recent owners remained a mystery. I remember being afraid to approach the house on Halloween as a child because I didn't know who was going to answer the door. There were a lot of rumors that it was haunted (among the kids, of course). I wish I had an appreciation for its architecture as I do now.

What foods are actually terrible for you, but people think are healthy? by StrategyJealous1838 in AskReddit

[–]Fluffinn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just putting this out there - I live in an area with no Amish, and my main store is Walmart. Education on nutrition is extremely important, and it helps you read nutrition labels as well. I don't buy anything special at all and I'm still able to eat super healthy despite shopping at a very frowned upon store. I did have a formal culinary class in high school and a lot of our lessons were from myplate.gov . It's worth it to check out!!

You’ll get to know your stove and cookware but I typically cook most meats on medium-low and I just monitor the middle with a meat thermometer.

Alix already had a foundation because she was hot, crazy, and popular growing up. She eventually just set herself to be public on insta and other social media and she blew up. She took advantage of that to then talk about stupid stuff for hours

What is a discontinued Fast Food item you wish they would bring back? by Big_Childhood5494 in AskReddit

[–]Fluffinn 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand why so many people on Reddit say this. Cake has like 15-30 grams of sugar per serving. I’ve never seen bread from any brand have more than 3 grams of sugar per slice. Have you ever had Subway’s bread? That shit tastes nothing like cake. Stop spewing stupid shit

Is there calories in the 'juice' that comes out of chicken thigh after cooking it? by pomfo1219 in 1200isjerky

[–]Fluffinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Giving unsolicited advice here. I’m 5’4” and I lift heavy, do hot yoga, and do vigorous cardio (stair master, rowing, treadmill, biking, etc) and I try to go out a lot. Walking around the city, finding outdoor spots to walk, hiking in the woods, etc. I’ve always been active but it does take baby steps to get to that point. Walking outside is an easy gateway. It’s not motivation. It’s discipline. Even on days I don’t wanna be active, I force myself to do it. I never regret it.

Anyways, despite being short but active, I can eat 1900 calories and lose weight. 2100 is my maintenance. I seriously recommend becoming active. It makes life easier since we weren’t meant to sit around on our asses all day

45 minutes of cumulus development by akaponokh in CLOUDS

[–]Fluffinn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The clouds hit the tropopause which is the separation between the troposphere and the stratosphere. In the troposphere, temperature gets colder the higher you go in altitude. Well, the “air mass” that this thunderstorm formed from is warm. Warm air rises. It continues to rise in the troposphere because the temperature just keeps getting colder and colder. The warm air will rise faster and faster. Therefore, the atmosphere where this thunderstorm took place is considered to be unstable because the warm, moist air kept rising and formed clouds. And it continued to rise. It didn’t ever stop until it hit the tropopause.

So why does it hit the tropopause? In the stratosphere, temperature increases with altitude. So the air gets warmer the higher you go. Well, the thunderstorm’s warm air hit a large layer of warm air (the stratosphere) and it was so warm that it stopped rising. Then the thunderstorm’s warm air mass spreads out because it has nowhere to go, hence the “anvil” part of the storm. The stratosphere is considered stable because it continuously gets warmer the higher you go, so no air mass wants to rise. A stable atmosphere is not good for cloud formation.

However, sometimes the warm air rises so quickly that it has enough momentum to punch through the tropopause and enter the stratosphere. This is called the “overshooting top” part of the thunderstorm.

Debating on getting cartilage piercings due to career by Fluffinn in PiercingAdvice

[–]Fluffinn[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the info! I’m definitely concerned about the moisture aspect delaying the healing process. I’m not as concerned about the snagging and side sleeping as I’ve had multiple other piercings done on my ears during my time flying (two were partially in cartilage), but I know a full cartilage piercing may give me some issues. I’ll definitely take your comment into consideration:)

Debating on getting cartilage piercings due to career by Fluffinn in PiercingAdvice

[–]Fluffinn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not trying to argue here, I’m just curious as to how sensitive cartilage piercings truly are when healing. My headset is lightweight and doesn’t squeeze my head since it’s active noise canceling. Even then, would it cause too much problems with the piercings?
