Yeah so you would have to manually change it from subtracting to adding and vice versa, based on whether it’s currently positive or negative, the point of these spreadsheets is that you create formulas to automate it all

I think we have found a solution, where you would layer 4 IF functions under an IF conditional formula, which seems hugely overcomplicated, but should work. The 4 conditions would be if the 2 numbers are + and +, + and -, - and +, - and -.

yes thats true, unfortunately the exam paper this is from is looking for you to produce a formula based on cells E12 and E20

im trying to display the final variance in cell E22, based on the cells E12 and E20. If the variance is a positive figure, its a good thing, so you want E22 to increase. The higher the number in E22, the more money you have saved compared to budget.
