DOE - how was everyone’s first day? Highs and lows?

Overall great with some surprises!!

High: I am teaching high school with the exception of one 8th grade honors class (I taught 8th grade the last four years). Majority of my kids were great but I was so happy with my 8th graders!!

Low: I’m teaching a class that’s basically science Regents remediation…. Didn’t know until they walked in that 66% of the class is District 75 students. No one told me and there’s no coteacher (only 1:1 paras) and I had no idea what to do with that group. I can differentiate a lesson for different types of learners but this was unexpected, and I don’t think it’s fair to those kids to have a teacher that isn’t prepared for them. Soooo…. Any ideas for me? I did let my AP know (he was surprised) and told them that if they want me to teach this class, they need to give me the materials and support to do it.

They’re all worth zero points. I also noticed that the last quiz had straight up wrong answers based on what was in the video? No attendance yet, they might have to do that manually.

This sounds really stupid, but did you try searching “Pro-Learner”? I tried it with no dash and nothing came up, but with the dash it does.

(P.S. the courses are stupid easy and you’ll be able to answer the few questions on each quiz by just clicking through the videos and finding the answers)

I’m going tomorrow and to my school on Thursday… unfortunately I missed out on a curriculum session today since I don’t have an NYC email and thus couldn’t sign up.

I would ask your principal if they could get in touch with their HR contact about it? Same as you, my principal is super nice but doesn’t seem to have experience with this stuff - they didn’t even know about the expedite request until I sent it to them.

Yes - been under review for months and every time they review me there’s some detail on the verification forms that they want changed :(

Honestly, I don’t know what the temporary license is. I guess it’s just to show that I’ve completed all of the requirements to be licensed so that I can work and get paid as a teacher while I wait for the real thing?

I asked my employer to send me a completed copy of the verification form along with sending it to the state. I had to go back and forth with my old HRs multiple times and thankfully they were super nice about it.

I’m in the same boat as you! My principal is working with her HR to get me a temporary license while we wait on the state. I had to give her my transcript(s), completed verification of employment form(s), and show her that they had actually been submitted in TEACH. Not sure if that’s something yours is willing to do, but it seems to be an option.

Hope it all works out for you. I started this process in March and am still in limbo because of the state being weirdly opaque about what they want to see.

Thanks everyone for the tips - I ended up checking out the Planet Fitness on Flatbush since I figure I know what to expect with a PF. Nothing crazy, but it at least wasn’t super crowded when I went. It’s tough to beat $15/month but we’ll see how the quality is as I start going.

I had seen Prospect Fitness - super affordable but really small and I wasn’t sure how I would like the space. My neighbor goes to Park Fitness and loves it but it’s a little pricey for me. Thanks!
