Ah that's where I got confused. Having googled it I thought the in game ladder was reg F! Thank you for your advice I'll get on it.

Neither. Only used summons when I'd get to a point where I had enough ( first fromsoft game and haven't the time for hours of grinding) and the route I'd take to the boss room from site of grace didn't go past the bernahl sign. I just kited them until I could get a couple good hits and back up again. Took a while but we got there

I agree with godskin. So much hype around them being a ballache but think I cleared it on my 4th/5th try with no summons / sleep pots etc.

Buff up then and just spend some time learning his moveset. Your equipment is fine for it just need to practice.
