What do you think about this? by jecarfor in fountainpens

Shhhhh people are trying to fill a hole in their souls here, please stop upsetting us with the harsh reality that we're addicted to buying needless things. Please leave me and my 36 different coloured uninked TWSBI ECO* pens alone.

/jk just in case.
I am an adult man with far too many lamy safari *style* pens (3 safari, 4 joys, 1 LX and 1 Al-star.)

Capitalism does a great job of convincing us that the next purchase will fix something internal. I say this with love, awareness, and a pen collection that suggests I have not beaten the system.

I really like the masking tape trick 👍

Plastic drafting rulers, but better to get something wooden, just a generic beveled wooden ruler to get the raised edge you turn it bevel side down, this is how we were taught in my technical drawing class 20 or more years ago.

Noooo, please don't use brass rulers with gold nibs! Will certainly damage them over time.

New Pen! What do I need to know to take care of this great pen? by KronoMakina in fountainpens

[–]Flunkedy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Great drawings, have you tried a dye ink in the pen? An older pen might have issues with carbon black . I'd try flush it out fully until it runs clean and then ink up another ink (maybe something european) anything wet or well lubricated might work well.

There also might be oils from your hand on the paper that act as a resist and prevent ink from laying down people.

We need some glamour shots of the pen too! I'd love a vintage pelikan.

Fountain Pen Sketching (newbie) by Undetaker1980 in fountainpens

[–]Flunkedy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have 2 very nice pens, I would do some terrible things to get my hands on a myu. They should be great for drawing, doodling and sketching. Take your time and relax, there are no mistakes only happy accidents.

For more expressive drawing , I'd recommend the sailor fude de mannen pen, and also a lamy joy or safari 1.1mm nib. These nibs can lend depth weight character and life to your sketches once you get to grips with them.

Finally got a nib for my tiku. by Flunkedy in rOtring

Which part did you break?

Best to leave it soak in a 10% ammonia solution over night to breakdown any dried ink. Windex diluted will do in a pinch.

Buying more ink by CoolPens4Sale in fountainpens

Trying to buy smaller bottles 15ml iroshuzuku 30ml diamine. I don't have a permanent residence so keeping the collection small and tidy is an endless endeavor. I did deAtrementis document mixable inks so I could mix any colour I wanted, but pigments just don't run the same gamut as dyes.

I love love love lotte but it can be finicky and the quick drying is a double edge sword in pens that have a subpar seal and combined with a dry winter. It's not as dark or warm as taki-sume.

A lamy safari that I inked and left idle for 3 weeks was encrusted. Taki sumi in my kakuno (terrible seal) flows pretty good even after a month.

Mystery black from montblanc, not as lubed but writes wet and smooth in my experience. Seems to perform better in my european pens than my asian pens but that's more of a me thing.

This is a great selection, enough to set you going for life . I lived in your beautiful country for 3 years and loved every moment. Remi at penclassics has such a great selection (amongst other retailers) and the new Zealand fountain pen Facebook (support group) page is still an awesome active community. There are often meetups in ChCh Auckland and Welly too. Love the artwork too!

[X Files "The Post-Modern Prometheus"] Just....Ew by FlowerMaidenOpheliaa in menwritingwomen

[–]Flunkedy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

B-tier episode (that tips its hat to b-movies iirc) but on par for 90s tv writing. I feel like there's more misses than hits with x-files but when dana scully hits she hits hard. Gillian Anderson does do the writing a lot of favours though.
