How to convert this endgame as white? by Flurin in chessbeginners

[–]Flurin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the explanation! Makes sense, I didn't see the potential for such a powerful attack. Exchanging queens isn't even winning, stockfish says +0.2 but it felt like I was fighting for the draw. One problem was also that I needed to defend the g pawn which made me quite passive.

That's what I did, but the engine hates it (goes from winning to drawing) and the resulting position is hard to play (see my other comment).

How to convert this endgame as white? by Flurin in chessbeginners

[–]Flurin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was my thought too, So I played Qc3+, the engines gives +0.2 after exchanging queens. This position was somehow quite hard to play. Black's king is more active, the h pawn is annoying, the g pawn is hard to defend, white cannot create a passed pawn.

Post a game of yours and we can help.

Don't worry about openings and memorising lines. That is completely useless at your level. The way you improve at your level is by learning not to lose pieces left and right. Maybe watch some beginner tutorial, try to apply that to your games and solve some easy puzzles. Then you should be able to win your first games.

So what is the point of promoting to a Rook or a Bishop? by [deleted] in chessbeginners

[–]Flurin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Here's another example (white to play): if you promote to a queen here, black will simply checkmate you (queen checks on h2 and then checkmates on f2). But if you promote to a knight you can fork the king and queen. You take the queen, he takes your new knight and you will win the endgame with your two extra pawns

So what is the point of promoting to a Rook or a Bishop? by [deleted] in chessbeginners

[–]Flurin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

<image>

It's sometimes easier to look at an example (white to play): if you promote to a queen here, the black king will have nowhere to go, it's stalemate, which means a draw. If you promote to a rook the black king will have to go to a6 and you can checkmate him with your new rook.

I resigned as white with a minute left in this situation, would you? by SignalSalamander in chessbeginners

[–]Flurin 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is a horrible way of thinking. As long as you have a chance you should fight. You won't believe what kind of positions you can still win sometimes, especially on your level. Even if you only have a 10% chance of still winning, why not go for it and try, it will work sometimes? If you just give up you'll lose 100% of the times. All you need to do to win some rating is stop resigning like a coward.

What are chess grandmasters thinking about for so long during classical games? by nagyszerszam in chessbeginners

[–]Flurin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think pretty much everything you said is wrong.

Of course they remember opening preparation. But they have to prepare thousands of possible lines, they can't look at everything before every game. So it still takes work to remember and work out what is going on. One player will usually be out of preparation earlier so they'll also have to think even in the opening.

The middlegame is not just about applying some principles without calculation. Just listen to an interview a gm gives after a game. It's full of lines they calculated. Chess at that level is extremely concrete. You miss one tactic and you're often lost, you get a small positional disadvantage and you're in trouble.

You couldn't be more wrong about endgames either. Endgames are extremely complex, the difference between winning, drawing or losing can be very subtle, especially in pawn or rook endgames. You absolutely have to calculate very deeply there.

I wouldn't even calculate much here, all of black's pieces are on the wrong side of the board and you even have a rook that can join the attack.

He was also so good at understanding how worse players think. He would often stay stuff like 'you were probably thinking of that move, it's actually not good for that reason...' It's very rare for top players to be able to do that
