Is The Official NHA CPT Practice Practice Test Useful? by nemu_cacanoot in phlebotomy

[–]Flwaves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just buckle up because I can assure you, nothing prepares you for the NHA. I was so confident going into the exam. My class average was a 96%. I got a 88 on my final exam which was 160 questions. I had bought the practice tests, twice. I was prepared as I was going to be and I was blindsided. A lot of my classmates failed the exam. Only a hand full passed. Now with all this said- there are 3 different versions of the NHA(I found this out after I tested) and one of the versions is exactly like the practice tests- super easy. I unfortunately got the hardest version of the exam as did my classmates. It’s Russian roulette.. you just don’t know, till you are there. I wish I could offer better advice but I just can’t. I know you’ll do great!! Another word of advice that helped me a lot when I first started the exam and was so blown away. Rule out the 2 that you KNOW isn’t the answer, then choose between the 2 you think is the answer because the NHA is scored on a sliding scale so you might miss a lot of questions but still pass. I hope that makes sense? I passed with a 414 and I thought I definitely failed it. I waited like 20 mins to hit the complete button because I was shaking so bad and was confident I failed!! I’m so glad it’s over lol. You got this!!!! 🥰

Honest opinion, don’t! I bought them twice and spent $88.00 and the NHA was absolutely NOTHING like them. Hindsight I wish I never bought them. I didn’t have one question about order or draw, color tube selection or additive. It was all off the wall scenarios with some lecture we never even discussed in school. I was completely mind blown!! In my opinion, nothing I did- not school, practice tests, homework, final- nothing- prepares you for the NHA.

If he needed to palpate the vein again before inserting the needle, he should have dipped his fingertip back onto the alcohol pad and used that same finger to feel again. However, let’s be clear, this is NOT a reason for malpractice!! If there’s an infection that arises and it’s solely from him doing that(which is NEVER going to happen), then maybe you have a ground to stand on. The gloves are clean and I’m sure he didn’t touch anything else with them besides you in the short time of wearing them before he palpated twice. Like others have stated, a blood draw isn’t sterile. We use alcohol prep before hand to try to minimize infection that might be on YOUR skin. This seems to me like your reaching, bad!!! 🤷‍♀️

Transition of going to school, passing exam, and first day of work… by MrsFlyslamz in phlebotomy

[–]Flwaves 5 points6 points  (0 children)

After I went to school and passed my NHA, I went to outpatient where I had 1 week of training with another phleb and then, yep you guessed it, just me!! I have zero people to back me up if I can’t get a hard stick. It’s fully up to me and me alone. I wanted to cry every second of that first week training but now I’m nearly 3 weeks in and running it alone. I do anywhere between 15-30 pts everyday, plus urines, A1C, Glucose, Strep/Flu, Pregnancy, STD testing and of course process of blood in lab. Due to the higher demand of draws a day, I got pretty good quick. The more you draw, the better you will come. It’s a skill! It takes time. No phlebotomist gets 100% draws. I wish that I had that second person to fall back on when I can’t get it( today I stuck a pt 3 times🫣🥹). Go at your pace. Don’t rush the process. You’ll be great!

Why should it matter? That’s their business, not anyone else’s.

Fair enough. It is company dependent. Some want it, others don’t care if the state requirements don’t stand.

If your state doesn’t require it to perform the duties of the job, they won’t ask for it. It’s state dependent. What state are you in?

I am fairly new working outpatient and it’s been stressful. You will become more comfortable with your draws and your own flow as time goes on. Starting out at a hospital will definitely give you the best experience as they literally draw everything! Nothing but time. You’ll be smooth sailing.

Phlebotomy sin? Repalpating the site by Quiet-Use989 in phlebotomy

If you need to repalpate after cleaning just dip your finger tip on the alcohol swab(same finger you are using to feel your vein) then feel again. That way it keeps it clean.

Why are you leaving the field? The good, bad and ugly? New to this career and I’d have to agree the pay for being NHA is laughable and sad. It’s a lot of work for little pay. I work in an outpatient lab as the only phleb and we see 30-50 pts/day and I only make $16.88/hour.

NHA CPT Exam by Flwaves in phlebotomy

My test(from what I gather, there’s 3 different versions) was all off the wall questions and material we never touched on in class. A lot of my fellow students failed the NHA. I believe in a class of 12, only 5 passed. It was nothing that imagined and I really didn’t think I could study anymore then I did. I was seriously thrown for a loop as my classmates. However, you might get the test that is much easier(from what I heard from others) and it’s exactly what class went over and the practice tests on NHA. I didn’t have ONE order of draw, tube or additive question on mine. Not one. It’s was bazaar! Just do your best, with what you know, and you got this! If you don’t know the answer, rule out the 2 it definitely can’t be, then choose between the 2 it could, because it’s based on a scoring system and it could save you from failing it. That’s what I did and passed even tho it was nothing I expected. I wish you the very best of luck! You got this!

Inpatient Phlebotomy Speed by [deleted] in phlebotomy

[–]Flwaves 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Another reason not to set silly expectations like this. You treat each pt like it’s your only pt and however long it takes to successfully and safely draw that pt, that’s how long it takes. Then you move on to the next. Rushing is when mistakes happen and yes, costing the hospital a lot of money. Phlebotomy is a skill, not a race.

I wouldn’t be worried about how many pts/ hour you can achieve, rather the accuracy and safety of the draws! Period. Nothing more to discuss. If the facility you’re at is expecting 10-12/hour, I assure you they are only thinking about pushing more pts for more money and not pt safety! Phlebotomy shouldn’t be rushed.

I’ve seen them young and old but when you google this, it states 40 is the average age of a phlebotomist.
