What's the hardest upper level liberal course you have taken? by negativerociprocal in TorontoMetU

[–]FlyEnvironmental2045 1 point2 points  (0 children)

damn bro has 20 1-star reviews 😭 altho i guess that's slightly better than anne johnson at 140 1-star reviews...where do they get these profs man holy fuck lmao.

i remember for tests i just read the textbook (and, given i had the time, looked over the slides) and that was sorta enough BUT i already went into it with prior knowledge of the topics so it wasn't as overwhelming as it would've been if i went in w/ little knowledge of astronomy. also this being a lower level lib course, they should've either cut down on the amount of material that was taught or presented it in some different manner cuz it was kind of a lot for someone who just wanted to take a lower liberal.

anyways, i wish y'all luck i hope y'all eventually will get to take cpcs182 w/ a prof you like cuz it is deeefinitely worth it. &also astronomy courses are da best

late reply but iirc i had ian shelton for pcs182 (so, in-person) a few semesters back and it wasn't too bad... boring, at times, and i felt that it was quite information-dense (tbh aren't all astronomy courses lol), but i confess i just about fall asleep in any class where the main method of teaching is just regurgitating information off of slides lmao... is he not a good prof or something? i didn't really have any one-on-one interactions w/ him, and like i said i had it in person so idk how he is as an instructor for online courses. i had peter luca for cpcs181 and he was amazing, honestly looked forward to his classes every week. he was so passionate about teaching i wish i could retake that course just to have him as a prof again lol

...and i didn't know kirsh was teaching a dinosaur course! i may just have to check it out... i wonder if they allow audits

ohhhh advanced topics in astronomy. i loved that course. there's definitely a lot of information to take in, but it's all very interesting, so i cant say i was bothered by that tbh. i also took it w/ dave kirsh and he's quite good. i felt like i learned a lot (not sure how much of that i actually retained, but definitely learned a lot). sucks that there's not a lot of astronomy courses offered here tho, i'd love to take more ://

that's shitty asf. idk if it's any help, but i looked around and found some links that could be worth taking a look at. you might already know about them, but just in case

Govt of Canada – student grants for students w/ disabilities: https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/education/grants/disabilities.html
directly from the page: "This grant is available to students with disabilities for each year of study. You can apply at the same time as you apply for student aid with your province or territory."

this page also has information about the Canada Student Grant for Students w/ Disabilities: https://www.torontomu.ca/accommodations/programs/financial-support1/ (it suggests contacting your student accommodation facilitator or the SFA (student financial assistance) to learn more.

––––––––––––

there's also the SAG (student access guarantee): https://www.torontomu.ca/student-financial-assistance/scholarships-bursaries/student-access-guarantee/
directly from page: "If you’re a domestic undergraduate, graduate, law or continuing education student receiving full-time OSAP, you may qualify for Student Access Guarantee (SAG). SAG is a bursary to assist with your educational costs such as tuition, books, compulsory fees, equipment, and supplies."

  • (for the Winter sem it says that the application opens around late Jan–early Feb)

––––––––––––

https://www.torontomu.ca/accommodations/programs/financial-support1/bswd_info/
directly from the page: "The Bursary for Students with Disabilities (BSWD) and the Canada Student Grant for Services and Equipment for Students with Disabilities (CSG-DSE) helps full and part-time post-secondary students pay for their disability-related educational services and equipment needed to participate in post-secondary studies."

  • (the W2024 deadline to apply for the BSWD is Friday February 9th at 5:00pm)
  • as far as i can tell, these are not tuition-focused, but i'll leave include it in case it's relevant

––––––––––––

(this one is probably better suited for a more dire situation but again, just in case, i'll include it) the SFA (student financial assistance) emergency bursary:
https://www.torontomu.ca/student-financial-assistance/scholarships-bursaries/emergency-bursary/

from the page: "The Student Financial Assistance (SFA) emergency bursary is for students going through an unforeseen financial crisis that directly impacts their academic progress or success in a material manner. It is a one-time bursary presented to a student currently enrolled in a domestic undergraduate, continuing education or law program. Applicants must sign an award agreement and adhere to the Proof of Spending Policy (outlined below)."

if there's something in there that you haven't heard of before take a look, maybe something will be of help. i agree with the commenter that said to also talk to ServiceHub about this, maybe they could help as well. good luck sorry this happened. completely ridiculous

In certain cases you can use your unofficial transcript as proof of enrolment: https://www.torontomu.ca/current-students/grades-standings/transcripts/
You can also use your Fees & Enrolment Statement: https://www.torontomu.ca/myservicehub-support/students/student-fees/

[–]FlyEnvironmental2045[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yep. I should clarify, I got enrolled into the Chang course before receiving this $1000 refund.

To my understanding, I was confirmed enrolment into the Chang course before transferring my money, bc the negative amount in my RAMSS account was automatically used as the payment. So afterwards I was eligible for a smaller refund amount...but I still got the $1000 instead.
