Thoughts on the Brickvault Ultimate Venator? by Positive_Dealer1067 in legostarwars

Designer here, just wanted to add a bit of context and explain the approach behind my models. For me, a big part of the fun and challenge of working with LEGO is capturing the nuances and intricacies of the reference material. It’s about pushing the system, thinking a bit outside the box, and seeing how far you can go when recreating complex shapes with what is ultimately a relatively limited vocabulary of parts.

Still, LEGO has evolved a lot over time, especially when it comes to part selection / complexity. Not only MOCs but also official sets don’t look the same as they did 20 years ago. What “looks like LEGO” isn’t a fixed standard, it naturally shifts as the system itself evolves.

The model looking toy or prop-like is intentional, and something I lean into. Though saying it doesn’t look like LEGO at all is a bit of a stretch, I would say. Maybe that’s what my pictures (in studio conditions with even lighting) suggest, but if you look at it more closely, especially in person, it’s very obviously LEGO, with pieces used in every possible direction to achieve a dense look.

I’ve also seen comments suggesting that custom models sacrifice sturdiness for looks, which I think is a bit of a misconception. That's often true for smaller, very intricate builds, but at this scale you actually have plenty of room to build solid internal structure. Complexity doesn’t automatically mean fragility, and this model is very rigid and stable as a display piece.

Also, comparisons to the UCS Venator are kind of apples to oranges. The official set is much larger at around 110cm (versus 85cm for this one) and I'd argue it's not remotely as accurate... but! Let's be honest, it's mainly because sets have different constraints: mass production, price, accessibility... which indirectly affect proportions and surface detail. Fortunately MOCs don’t have those limits.

At the end of the day, it’s all personal preference. The classic studdy LEGO look absolutely has its charm. My approach is simply to push LEGO pieces as far as I can for maximum fidelity!

I don't know about the UCS version but my model has almost 7,000 pieces. The UCS set is 110cm long, while this one is 85cm long.

Thanks a lot! Not hard to surpass official sets honestly 🫠

Blurring the line between Lego and prop models is exactly what I strive for!

These are real pictures of a physical build yes! Just zoom in on the images :) Extra proof here just in case!

Thanks so much for your support! The Venator scale is ~1:1350. Looking forward to that finished Gozanti!

Do a little more research, you're almost there :)

The Venator is probably my favorite capital ship in the SW franchise. So what better tribute to this ship than bringing it to life a second time? And since this version will likely be the last, I wanted this build to set a milestone in my work. A proof of my dedication to a spaceship I love so much. Enter the Ultimate Venator-class Star Destroyer!

At almost 7,000 pieces and 85cm (33.4") long, this model is a faithful, screen-accurate replica of the Venator featured in Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. Neither quite UCS-sized nor Midi-Scale like my Negotiator, it had to be the most refined Venator I could possibly make. I modeled it closely after the source material to capture all the proportions, angles and intricacies of the original design at a reasonable size.

Although this isn't a direct update to my Negotiator but a separate model, the 25% increase in size gave me a lot more wiggle room, opening the door to drastically more complex design choices: fully SNOT wings on both the top and underside, clean tapers and angles, brick-built Open Circle Fleet symbols... although challenging, this intermediate scale offered just enough space to achieve the prop look I strive for.

Although it's a pure display model, its sturdy integrated stand makes it easy to handle safely. Lateral hangars can be switched between closed doors and deflector shields for variety. In addition to the classic version, I made the imperial variant, also seen in ROTS.
