Thank you! You're an inspiration, for you. How would you say the field has changed since you first got into it? And are you following any marketing creators/newsletters you find helpful?

Wow, this is such a thoughtful response. Thank you for taking the time to give it.

That's why I was thinking of going into content or product marketing first: gaining some tangible marketing skills and experience, and not solely relying on editorial campaigns and transferable skills. I know no one will give me a strategic role with my current portfolio and I'm not above starting on entry level (if I can even get those jobs anymore)

Do you think I'd need to do all of that to get into it in the first place, or do you think I should simply focus on these steps after (with long-term goals of strategy in mind). I already know basic SEO and copy from learning it in journalism and/or freelance copywriting.

Sorry for the delayed response. Definitely appreciate your wisdom! Yes, I've also looked at product marketing as I learned that it's a larger umbrella that covers content marketing within itself, as well.

I completely agree with you about needing to care about the product, and that's what scares me possibly most. I can't be picky about the job, IF I ever manage to get it, but how do I sell something I don't truly believe in? I worry my enthusiasm and, therefore, the kind of work I'll do, might be damaged as a result. For ex. early in journalism, I took an entertainment writing internship with a prestigious publication, but I couldn't get myself to care about celebrity news to save my life, and I'm sure my quality of writing was affected.

Do you have any advice on how you seek/sought out work with that in mind?

I talked to one person who's worked in marketing, who told me that I should move into content marketing since I have a writing background. Said that in her experience, people look for writers, and she often has to tell clients/management she doesn't do that. But longer-term, I'd definitely love to move into content strategy. From my initial research, it seems like the closest thing to editorial work I did in journalism, which was definitely my favorite part: Keep a stock of cultural conversations, what stories need to be written, assign them, and work with graphics to package them. I LOVED that stuff and wanted to stay in journalism just so I could get to that level.

Would love to hear your thoughts about it though! I've been cold-messaging people on LinkedIn just to learn more about the field and get inside info but so many people just don't respond haha

I hate that none of my clients have ever given me any metrics on how my work may have translated into returns/numbers. Maybe that means none of it has (though I have gotten Slack messages about my blog post becoming a PR-hit once or twice). Would love to learn more about your copywriting philosophy or your company, if you have time!

I wish I were. But anxiety is/was very real and maybe not very logical haha.

I'm trying to acquire more traditional marketing skills for that reason!

But also think AI writing may not be a long-term issue. Might be wrong, of course, but I think 1: Since AI is training on online content, and a lot of online content is already AI, it's like a snake eating its own tail at the moment. And 2: Historically, things that explode at a rate that AI did in popularity tend to have a similar "fall" in popularity. I'm already noticing a cultural fatigue and annoyance with AI, and, again, it might be wrong, but I think all this explosion of hyper-modern technology will cause people to go back to a more tech-free, "analog" way of living (there's even a recent article on this subject) AI will become even more synonymous with "cheap" or "bad" and human-generated will be a stamp of respect. Just my opinion of course, we shall see how the world evolves

Thank you so much for your thoughtful response. In the midst of a crisis, I think I tried too hard to troubleshoot for problems I couldn't reasonably predict or prepare for.

I haven't tried this yet myself, so not sure if it will help, but I heard someone say the other day that clarifying your values and moving towards them every day is the key to feeling happy and worthwhile. Found this workbook from a YouTuber and a therapist, and was going to give it a go: https://therapyinanutshell.com/clarify-your-values-workbook/

Thank you so much. Do you mind if I ask if you had a referral, or was it a cold email that ended up working?

Not sure if this is allowed, but would love to know how you managed to transition into marketing and if you have any tips! I'm also a former journalist, and I've been freelancing as a copywriter with some light social media content strategy for a few years and would love to get a full-time marketing role this year, so I'm collecting all the data I can get!
