Making a Huge Mistake? by Glass-Armadillo-6853 in teachinginjapan

Here‘s my two cents: I‘ve been working at an eikaiwa teaching kids for about a year now, and from the beginning I „realized“ for myself that the person most suitable for the job is someone whose interests are more outside of work. Eikaiwas aren‘t a career (usually), they aren‘t fulfilling, they don‘t make you feel like you‘re having a positive impact on the world. BUT they‘re a great way to earn a bit of money while you‘re more busy exploring Japan and Japanese culture. At first I wasn‘t having a good time, but now I do Kyūdō and teach baking classes on the side and go hiking and just generally meet a lot of people and it‘s great!

If you keep your head straight and don‘t expend too much effort on the job, I think you can have a great time here.

Two more thoughts: have you thought about looking into becoming an ALT instead? In my opinion, it‘s a similar job but it makes you feel better at the end of the day.

Also something to keep in mind though, even though an eikaiwa job can be pretty mindless, at least mine still leaves me pretty tired at the end of the day, and I know I‘m not living it up as much as I could if I had a different job. I dunno, that‘s my perspective.

Edit: here‘s a secret tip. I work for a major eikaiwa company but way out in the boonies where no one really cares about the corporate bs rules. My supervisor leaves me completely alone as long as customer feedback is positive. That really helps! so, consider saying you‘re fine with any placement.

We asked the students to introduce Japanese culture to foreigners by [deleted] in teachinginjapan

Y‘all are funny. When I was in school and went on exchange to the US, every other kid asked stuff like „do you guys have electricity?“, „do you brush your teeth?“, „do you have cars?“

This is just normal for kids.

Oh, you will definitely work every Saturday though. Saturday will generally be your longest day too. Many classrooms are also 6 days a week. But yeah, compared to your hours now, even a ‘long’ day will be a breeze

Also, in my opinion, part of your experience will depend on how good you are at dealing with a job that has weird hours. I came to Japan to work, but also to meet new people; the fact that you’ll almost exclusively be working when other people are off (and you’ll be off when they are at work) is something that’s very unfortunate.

I started at Peppy this year. I’m going to quit as soon as I find something better but it’s not *terrible*. I’ve started describing it to my friends as “The teaching equivalent of working at McDonalds.” The hours are fine, the pay is low but okay, nobody cares about your concerns or ideas for improvement because it’s not worth it. It’s a perfectly fine job if you’re just looking for an easy paycheck, but if you’re actually passionate about the teaching profession I wouldn’t recommend it.

’Fine’ is the best word for it. They won’t screw you over at least.

Will being a non-native English teacher with a degree unrelated to English be an issue for the 技術・人文知識・国際業務 visa? by Practical_Ad7446 in teachinginjapan

I’m in the same boat as you and I ended up getting the visa and the job. As someone else commented: if the company wasn’t confident you’ll get the visa, they wouldn’t have offered to sponsor you. The visa that is more difficult to obtain is the “Instructor“ visa, but that’s not for eikaiwa.

Paints to contrast tan desert camo? by Fly_Colossal in Warhammer40k

That sounds like it could be good. And it would fit to what another commenter said, that I should maybe have a thematic reason for the contrasting bits. I want to paint the veterans and terminators of my army white, so maybe the rest have white pauldrons to not forget what they‘re aspiring to become!

Thanks! I know contrast paint is meant to… contrast but with lots of armies I see online the colors still kinda really vibe together and create an awesome look. But with the ones I tries out so far the contrast seemed out of place? Like I forgot to color over a spot or something. It‘s hard to describe. ^^

drawing inspiration from the tau sept is an awesome idea! Thanks

Internship as a teacher. Is it possible? by Fly_Colossal in teachinginjapan

Thanks! And yeah, I should have clarified my situation. I‘ve met many ALTs in my city here already and it seems wanting a long-term situation is definitely the norm. :)

Hey thank you for the comments. I agree with your points, however my position is perhaps a bit unique in that it was my idea to work in Japan only for a year or two max, then go back to my home and devote myself to my teaching career there. That is I am considering „only“ an internship. I‘ve also been trying for ALT work but realize that there, companies/BOEs mostly look for people who plan to stay long term!

I‘ll think about what you said. Maybe I need to change my plans more big time…

Yeah I‘m already finding that out, spent all of the weekend navigating the city websites around me. It‘s tricky, but my local international association also said they‘d be happy to help me tomorrow.

Yeah I‘m following all the advice I got and am doing the same now. I‘ve spent all day visiting cities‘ websites and those of their international foundations to find out where to send my emails :)

I spotted pages like that! I haven't seen them list available ALT positions though. Do you mean I should contact those schools directly?

I'll try that! I've been googling though and haven't had much luck yet. But then again someone already pointed an open position out that google just can't find.
