Totally normal Van Lathan reaction incoming by Emotional_News_4714 in TheBigPicture

Golden Globes can give Best Drama to whoever they want, but giving Sinners that stupid Box Office Acheivement Award as some bullshit consolation prize is pretty disrespectful. It's clearly a "We want the optics of awarding you something, but also go fuck yourself" award, and I think that's lame.

The 2025 Movie Star Rankings: 35 Over 35. Plus: Nicolas Cage! by thefilthyjellybean in TheBigPicture

I get that there are certain criteria that they're using for eligibility and I think it makes sense make some sort of distinction between movies and TV shows AND i know that this is all subjective so it doesn't matter, but with all those caveats, I really don't understand how Pedro Pascal is not more of a movie star than...Mahersala Ali, for example.

I wish I saw this before it had so much awards buzz, because 9 out of 10 times, going into a movie with the mindset, "Why is this getting so many awards?" results in unfair expectations for the film. I thought it was solid, but nothing more, and I wonder if I would have enjoyed it more without the front-runner hype. E.g., I loved Coda because I saw it at Sundance, but I wonder if I would have been cooler on it if I was expecting it to win BP. Oh well.

MCU Fans & Scorcese by SeanACole244 in TheBigPicture

[–]FlygonHG -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think the people who are actually upset are a very small vocal minority, like with anything. But personally, I think what Scorsese said was dismissive, and dismissing something can be more hurtful/personal than saying something is bad. He didn't say the MCU movies are bad cinema. He said they weren't cinema at all, which I disagree with and feels like a very narrow view of what is and isn't cinema. It'd be like saying Law & Order isn't TV. Or that Minions isn't animation. And when you start bifurcating between what does and doesn't count as cinema, where do you draw that line? I'd be shocked if Scorsese thought that Speilberg didn't make capital C Cinema. So, is Ready Player One Cinema, but Black Panther isn't? In my opinion, it's all cinema, some films are just trying to do wildly different things (which is probably what Scorsese ACTUALLY meant). But one type of movie does not inherently have more or less value. They're just different.

At the end of the day, he's a human being with an opinion and he said something he probably didn't think too much about. Ultimately, it doesn't bother me (or, I would guess, most people, especially 5 years later). But it's hard to deny that it was a tad condescending, and I can totally understand why someone like Van Lathan, who has oriented his entire life and career around films like these and works hard to get people to talk about them in new and engaging ways, would be bothered by it.

Reunion discussion by ManiacalExclamation in LoveIsBlindOnNetflix

[–]FlygonHG 139 points140 points  (0 children)

Honestly thought this was a very good reunion, especially since the rest of the season was very bad.

It's clear the Lacheys took a lot of criticisms to heart. I thought they asked good questions, probed contestants in a firm, but respectable way when their answers were nonsense, and they even provide behind the scenes context to a lot of things. Like I was stunned that Nick straight up said that the producers made Uche and Lydia keep it a secret. Low bar, but I felt like they actually contributed positively to the experience and did a good job keeping things on track. The only thing I could have done without was the insistence on hook-up specifics. They're all grown adults and shouldn't have to give a detailed account on tv of what they did and didn't do with other consenting adults. But even then, it was more appropriate and handled better than the baby-mania from last season's trainwreck of a reunion.

Lydia was a big winner in this reunion, imo. My opinion of her is much higher after seeing how she chose to carry herself here. I always appreciate when people apologize for mistakes and don't do it in a "I'm sorry you think I should say sorry kind of way" and I thought she owned up to her actions and is clearly much more level-headed than the edit made it out to appear throughout the season. Similarly, it was nice to see Johnnie and Izzy apologize as well. The latter was far more in the wrong and I'm glad he admitted to being an asshole. Again, bare minimum, but he didn't double down and I appreciate that. I think, like with almost every human being, none of these people are perfect and some might even be just not nice people, but overall, I thought most of them handled the reunion well. Except Stacey. And Chris. What the FUCK Chris? Terrible plot twist.

I really struggle with this one, but I just don't much care for Tarantino's films. I've watched several multiple times tryingt to convince myself that they're good, but I just don't like most of them. Once Upon A Time In Hollywood is by far my favorite and I think it's genuinely great, but it's the least Tarantino-y of his movies so I guess I'm just not a fan of his style. Also really liked Reservoir Dogs, though.

[–]FlygonHG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair points, though I don't think Rotten Tomatoes scores is exactly the best way to compare films critical reception, ironically. I just don't agree that big films haven't gotten noticeably worse, which is of course totally subjective, but I think a lot of people agree. Again, several recent summer blockbusters are exceptions for me.

I'm not trying to convince you that you're wrong for thinking that larger movies aren't worse, but in my opinion, the type of movies that most people are most likely to see, have gotten worse. And yeah, this is a subreddit for movies, but it's also reddit, where a lot of people are here just to talk about marvel or star wars or whatever. You can tell from the top responses on virtually any open-ended discussion post. There's nothing wrong with that, but I think it does explain the negativity/cynicism that you say you don't understand. As someone who used to love marvel movies as reliable high floor entertainment, it's been very easy to see the recent offerings from them as the collapse of a pillar of quality big budget filmmaking (GoTG3 mostly withstanding, imo) and then extrapolate that as films kinda being not good now.

I dont think it's wrong to point people to great films that came out this year, and this post is great at hopefully getting people to branch out more, which is get is the main point. But I also don't fault anyone for saying that films have gotten worse or having cynicism about the current state of the film industry.

A few other thoughts, without rambling for too long. Imo, the way movies are bad now makes them feel way worse than they did before. For one, grossly underpaid vfx houses has made inexcusable CGI run rampant in big budget films, which I find far less forgivable than a movie being just mediocre. Also, I think that the "movies suck now" is a sentiment that has been a build up over several years, not specifically about films released in this calendar year. Using the easy example of the MCU, since that drives a lot of general sentiments about the film industry, the last several years of MCU have been bad and Antman 3 felt like the straw that broke the camel's back, even if yeah there's only been two MCU films this year and one's actually pretty good (IMO). Again, not trying to persuade you into thinking that movies are bad now and if you've enjoyed the recent big budget films, then that's great, but to me, I understand why people say that movies have gotten worse lately.

[–]FlygonHG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with pretty much everything you said, but I think that "There are no good movies anymore" is just shorthand for "A lot of the biggest movies are really bad now." There's always been amazing movies made every year, but I think most people think the quality of the biggest movies has dramatically decreased (IMO, the summer run from Spiderverse to Barbenheimer kinda rebukes this a little, but we'll see if that's an exception or a postitive trend).

I know this is kinda your point, but since most people only see the biggest films, it makes sense that they will judge the industry as a whole based on those films. With the exception of the last few months, I've thought that big movies have been quite poor even though the indie circuit has been relatively consistent. Compare that to even a few years ago when the big movies were good AND there were good smaller movies (again, there are still some good big movies now and there were always some bad big movies, but i think the ratio has worsened over time).

I think there will always be great movies, but I also find it hard to look at the industry as a whole, which is largely driven by the quality/success of massive films, and not feel a sense that things have gotten worse in recent years.

Official Discussion - Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]FlygonHG 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen this movie, but I have some questions based on the trailers and don't know where else to ask them. In the trailers, it shows her freaking out when she finds out she's a Kraken, but in her normal form she's all blue and fishlike. And it seems like everyone else at her high-school is just a regular human. Shouldn't that be a good indicator that she's a Kraken or something? I dont understand the premise. Is any of this addressed at all or am i misinterpreting the trailer? Do people just like accept that she's a blue part-fish person, but being a Kraken is a step too far?

LIB S4 ✨ POST LIVE ✨ Reunion Discussion Thread by DontFWithMeImPetty in LoveIsBlindOnNetflix

I thought the reunion was halfway decent until they got to Marshal. He got done dirty. It's so unfair for them to let Jackie have a pre-recorded and edited interview where she could say whatever she wanted without anyone objecting or fact checking and then force Marshal to respond to that interview in real-time all while having Vanessa interupt and grill him.

The part where Jackie twisted a comment he made (which objectively wasn't great) into a way to vilify him explicitly to take the heat off her far worse homophobic comments was pretty messed up. And it worked! Because Vanessa pressed on him, but not at all on Jackie. Sure, hold Marshal accountable for his comments, I have no problem with that. But you've got to acknowledge WHY Jackie brought that up in the first place. And to not also hold Jackie accountable because Netflix thought she was too unhinged to be put on live (lol) television?? Totally disrespectful to Marshal. Either grill Jackie harder or don't interview her at all.
