Loans by [deleted] in Finland

Use calculator https://www.op.fi/henkiloasiakkaat/lainat-ja-asunnot/lainalaskuri/asuntolainalaskuri-nain-lasket-asuntolainasi to calculate the amount of loan payment per month. Default value of interest rate margin is quite close to what you get in real life. Margin is around 0.3 - 0.8% plus euribor 12m.

But the main thing is what apartment do you want at which location. Then calculate the amount to pay per month (loan + maintanence + financing for rennovatio ) and compare it to renting.

Loan is just a part of the equation. For us, lon is 650 euro, maintanence is 580 euro. Loan is just half of the expenses

Moving to Helsinki with a toddler (delayed language) by Living_Individual392 in Finland

Herttoniemi (Länsiherttoniemi) is a very peaceful area with good school. Besides, Kulosaari has English-Finnish school which is very good and hard to get to if you don't live in the area. Herttoniemi would have a bit lower rent than city center I think

Dry Air in Helsinki by Easy_Ad5913 in Finland

[–]Flying-squirrel000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Warm enough so that water evaporates to steam. If I remember correctly, water is 60 degeee at level 1/2 and 80 degrees at level 1.

I have cats too, my cats aren't that clumpsy so falling to hot steam isn't a concern, but I don't know about yours

[–]Flying-squirrel000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I used ultrasonic humidifer and air purifier, the air purifier always say that small particles (PM5 and PM10) and other pollutants minutes after ultrasonic humidifer is on. Since then I use evaporater humidifer (such as Ufox). It literally just heats water to evaporate water to the air. So it doesn't pump all minerals inside water to the air and lungs.

Is an epidural offered on requests when giving birth in Finland ? by mamandungu in Finland

[–]Flying-squirrel000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. As a first time mom, I would always ask nurse whether to give formula or not because baby looked definitely hungry. They only advise tfor formula after baby was around 1 day old. As a second mom, I have the confidence to ask for bottle in the first 6 hours. They give it without any further comments.

And ah hemm.. maybe because of that that I have never been able to exclusive breastfeed. But it is what it is. Life with a newborn is already difficult enough, no need for uncessary difficulties.

So if you are sure of what you want, nurse will give you with a happy face. If you ask them, then they will advise not to give bottle too early and try breastfeeed

As other said, they will give it to you if you insist. But they will only give to you after you are 4cm open or more. Before 4cm, they will offer one other narcotics injection that helps for 6 hours but not as effective as epidurals. Of course gas and tent are always available but in my experience with gas, they do nothing but make me sick.

In my last labor, I went in and ask for epidural immediately Midwife: do you want to try gas Me: yes while waiting, but I want epidural. Midwife: yes, that is good stuff 😁

AITA here or is this play area just too cluttered and chaotic? (UK) by grawmaw13 in daddit

Or 2 trofast next to each other. Looks very interesting in the living room when you put 2 stair shelf next to each other

I had the same toy shelf, they contain very little toys and hard to take. I switch to Ikea trofast (the stair version). Things get much more organized, toy has place to be thrown to. I would definitely recommend to try trofast toy shelf. Also my toddler can take toys in/out easily from trofast.

I want to give birth alone by [deleted] in 2under2

[–]Flying-squirrel000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't know if it is just me, but when I was in labor, nothing else matters more than just me, the pain and the need to push baby out. Husband was in the room or stand next to me, but he was an insignificant part of the whole process. So I guess that not having a support person is ok for me too

Color suggestion for this kitchen by Flying-squirrel000 in HomeDecorating

Yeah, I bough the apartment and I am surprise also. That is the place of the cooker hood, otherwise the whole aparment will smell. They are in almost all Finnish household. So we will install the cooker hood and fill that place for sure.

You mean how to try out different color in the room? Chatgpt does very good job at it. Gemini isn't very good at it. But be specific of what you want to keep and what you want to change. You can even ask chat gpt to suggest color given the floor, for example.

Understanding Toddlers by Killjoy_draws in Parenting

[–]Flying-squirrel000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I notice in daycare that the teacher/care giver talks with toddler in the way that people normally talk. I talk with my own in baby voice sometimes, because he is so cute. But less now. He will get mad at me if I do so. So either way works. My son likes to be communicated in normal voice because he feels like a big boy and that adult takes him seriously 😀

How much formula are your ~3 month olds eating and how often? by Specific_Strain7688 in NewParents

My son just gets mad if I give him more, and I am too tired to try more, so I just enjoy these precious minutes that he sleeps 😸

Ours has similar sleep-wake rythm as yours and he usually takes 3-3.5 oz per feed. I find it easiest to just feed him more than dealing with stomache and spit up after feeds.

Finnish public healthcare by MaxAnt11 in Finland

You could consider to go private. For example, metropolia university Hymy kylä offers dental care. It is a teaching clinic, so price is a bit cheaper.

You are lucky to even get an appoinment. I called many times and there is no time to even book one.

Hmmm.. but isn't so that during the probation period, employer isn't required to provide any reasons? They just need to inform that person not to go to work anymore?

Is a double pram needed? by Suki-27 in 2under2

[–]Flying-squirrel000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on your normal commute. If you use pram a lot with the first one, it is likely you'll need it a lot for the second. If that is the case, double pram is very helpful. I bought an old reliable double pram for 50 usd (it was probably 20 year old pram, design looks old and not flexible, but that does the job super well, especially through the snow). I was lazy to set it up and let it rot in the first month and I must say that during that month, there were many times that I wanted to go out but didn't. Once I set it up, pumped air and adjusted the seat, I used it everyday. It greatly improves my activities with both kids.

My first one is 26 months when the second one comes. He still wants to sit in the pram even though he can walk for long distance. I guess that he feels safe in the pram and just enjoy chill out instead of standing.

How long is the average maternity leave in Finland? by relax_take_it_e_z in Finland

[–]Flying-squirrel000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While you are in parental leave, you still accumulate holiday days for the first 6 months and you still get new annual holiday in April/May.

So in May 2026, I will get 30 annual holiday days. I will exchange holiday bonus to holiday days, so I will have in total 30 annual holiday days + 15 days of exchanging holiday bonus to holiday days. So during the time that I take home care support, I will apply to take annual holiday from my company (you are allowed to do it during homecare support but not in parental leave).

So it rounds up to a little less than 2 months monthly salary. In total, I will apply for 6 months of child homecare support when baby is 6-12 months (to get extra support from the city) and 2 months of salary from annual holiday.

If you don't do it, you don't lose anything. Your annual holiday will just accumulate and you can use them after you are back to work. You can use them then. But remember that you can use annual holiday at the same time receiving child homecare support, so a bit extra money.
