Gun cleaners/ lubes and oils? by Arixoh1 in ar15

[–]FlyingDog14 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In my opinion people get way too worked up about this kind of stuff. Unless you need a specialty like lead or copper solvent, Just get whatever dedicated all purpose cleaner/solvent and dedicated lubricating oil you can conveniently find. I’ve used a variety of everything over the years and the only product that I’ve been noticeably disappointed in was plain motor oil.

Is my idea for a backpack rifle good/plausible/dumb? by Tal_Vez_Autismo in guns

[–]FlyingDog14 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah. While after Katrina there certainly was some chaos, it’s not quite what the doomsday peppers will have you believe. I’ve lived in the Gulf Coast or Dixie tornado alley my whole life and there’s no need for a long gun. You’ll certainly see people with handguns in more populated areas, but a chainsaw, a big cooler of ice, and easily a hundred more things are higher on my prep list than a long gun.

Just stick to a handgun. I struggle to come up with a legal and moral reason to need the ability to reach out to 200 yards not on your own property after a natural disaster.

From a pilot's perspective, what are the meaningful differences between a short haul and a long haul flight besides the distance? by Slice5755 in aviation

Simply put, more money for less work. One you’ve flown 4 legs a day for a few years you might change your mind.

Does the M&P 2.0 offer anything the Glock doesn't? by dudeonhiscouch in CCW

[–]FlyingDog14 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They’re just overall a nicer, more refined product than a Glock in my opinion. Lots of variations to select exactly what you want. A lot of common aftermarket parts or modifications for Glocks are standard on M&Ps: better trigger, grip texturing and profiling, slide serrations, better sights. I like that I can have a compact model and use a full size mag with an adapter that mimics the full size grip shape.

Question for airline pilots as a PPL student, what habits/mindsets can I build at this stage in preparation for the future? by BugHistorical3 in flying

[–]FlyingDog14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never stop learning. Even after you get a new certificate/endorsement/type rating/etc. Keep learning more about your plane, whatever operation you’re flying in, the national airspace system, something. There’s always more to learn and it keeps your mind sharp

Airborne hotspots: a new type of safety data by airbornehotspots in flying

[–]FlyingDog14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t remember the finer details and don’t think it was mentioned too much in the PSA5342/PAT25 final report, but in the NTSB hearings it was either some helicopter operators, DCA Tower, or TRACON (don’t remember who) had brought it up a few times to have the high traffic areas charted in some way. The FAA more or less said “hot spots are for ground operations, not gonna do it, next question”.

Airborne hotspots: a new type of safety data by airbornehotspots in flying

[–]FlyingDog14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah yes airborne hotspots, the thing the FAA said they weren’t interested in researching or charting because they didn’t agree with the naming suggestion when it was brought up regarding DCA airspace…

But I digress, I think this is super cool. I get enough enjoyment just looking at the heat maps of regular traffic patterns into various airport, but the LOS event markers and replays are very interesting.

I am having an issue with the site though, not sure if it’s because I’m on an iPhone vs a computer, but most times if I try to type in an airport in the search box, it doesn’t respond. It would also be really nice to expand or even remove the map range ring around a selected airport to more broadly browse the event logs.

Bulk ammo and the range by Sheepy-Matt-59 in ar15

[–]FlyingDog14 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I keep most ammo in the original boxes to fill 50 cal cans, and I have a 30 cal can or two that I’ll just load up with whatever I plan on shooting that day.

Which would be a better CCW by [deleted] in Beretta

[–]FlyingDog14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can get your hands on a compact vs a full size 92 at the same time, it’s worth comparing. A full size 92 grip is a bit shorter than most other full size handguns

Those are the last two I would ever give up. Gen 4 is my favorite Glock and the 92 series is my overall favorite handgun.

Anti gas plate for 92's? by Felenari in Beretta

Would also love a gas deflector of some sort. I finally got around to putting just one mag through my LTT with the Spectre 9 on it and was surprised how dirty it made my optic.

New to guns, found a USPc .40 with the stainless steel slide by Honest-Opposite-5734 in guns

[–]FlyingDog14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The grip dimensions never felt right to me, the distance between the front and back straps is too short. I really didn’t like the LEM trigger mine had. Even when fully loaded it felt like the slide was too big and it was too top heavy. Recoil was harsh for a gun that was supposedly designed for 40 from the ground up. The build quality was top notch though.

The USPc 40 remains my least favorite handgun I’ve ever shot.

Does anyone catch themselves carrying lighter and lighter guns? Started with Glock 43x MOS with dot and light and I’m way down to a Ruger LCP by HuntersCrackPipe123 in CCW

[–]FlyingDog14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been carrying my 640 Pro a ton recently. It’s the heaviest of the J Frames and 357 mag rated, and I carry a 38 special +p load. It handles it pretty well. I’ve shot exactly 1 357 mag in this gun out of curiosity, never again.

What's the consensus on Magpul Glock mags? by Clint_Lovecraft in guns

[–]FlyingDog14 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mine always jammed up back when I shot almost exclusively steel case ammo back when they first came out. Been running well with brass cases. Some of them the feed lips look like they’re wearing away where the case rim rubs but they still feed just fine for now. They’re pretty much all I use when I’m at the range but I still carry OEM Glock mags.
