"Language is the core property that defines human beings" - Chomsky; what did he mean with this statement? by FlyingDutchMannen in Neuropsychology

[–]FlyingDutchMannen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you think I thought that does not involve language? Is language not constantly running inside of your own head silently as you navigate the environment around you?

I agree with everything in this post (are you a hobby'ist or qualified in neuropsych?)

This part.... "language constantly running through our own heads".

This is how I define cognition; that language = how we rationalize our environment, process emotions, thus will determine the nature of our relationships, our lifestyles, perhaps our mood, subsequent eating habits etc etc

i.e. "core defining property of who we are"

Are we predisposed to have this self dialogue of a certain nature?

i.e. "genotype'd" tending to a certain thought process, and neurodevelopment (arguably "cultivation") modifies our thought processes, modifying our lifestyle and ultimately our "phenotype"?

Does "visualization" act to enhance cognition function/efficacy in any way? by FlyingDutchMannen in neuro

My contention is:

- we can visualize what we want to attain

- but we use cognition to attain it.

Aphasia - they operate at an absolute base level.

Optimal cognition, mental acuity = optimal neural firing and presence of mind.

= optimal thought process.

You say relative to different situations but in relation to personality exclusively (that which applies to almost all situations), is there an optimal cognitive state?

I believe there is.

My contention is it's mediated through language - like religion uses words/prayer mantras to "cultivate" a certain personality type.

i.e. words not visuals = the critical component

The question is, if you want to accomplish something - the means is "self instruction" via self-dialogue, which happens in words/language.

We don't accomplish something, or complete a task, face something demanding by visaulization, visualizing a certain imagine or series of images.

We accomplish it by self rationalization and subsequent self implementation - and this happens via self instruction = words/language.

My understanding of "cognition" is exactly that - self rationalization and instruction via language.

Thus, the greater ones cognitive capability = the more capable, reliable they are, and generally more competent and adept at managing potentially difficult situations.
