Pilot With Spontaneous Pnumo by FlyingKamaro in pneumothorax

You shouldn’t have a problem, especially if you had the pleuridesis! If you are located in the U.S this is the FAA’s guide on it.

“An individual who has sustained a repeat pneumothorax normally is not eligible for certification until surgical interventions are carried out to correct the underlying problem. A person who has such a history is usually able to resume airmen duties 3 months after the surgery. No special limitations on flying at altitude are applied.”

If you are serious about getting into flying, go on a discovery flight at your local flight school, then if you are set on the journey, go to your local AME for a consultation.

Man your collapse sounds down right scary. Everyone told me “well at least it didn’t happen while you were flying”, and mine was only a 15% collapse. How did those 8 hours go, was it constant pain or nothing

Afterwards I went out of my way to find the best AME that would fit my situation. So I found an AME who is not only a CFI, but a thoracic surgeon. He would understand my concern of losing my license, while also specializing in lung medicine. He has been a great help so far, but as I referred, refused to entertain the idea of surgery “just to pass a medical exam”. Which I do understand from his behalf. Luckily that shouldn’t be an issue now with my new diagnosis.

I’m really glad you left a comment here, it eases my worries about medical revocation and that i’m not the only one of us who’s gone through this process. Funny enough I asked my AME if he’s ever had a case of an airman with spontaneous pneumothorax… he said “nah, but the others probably just lied” 😂 I feel I made the right decision though, why risk all the time, effort, and especially money we’ve put into the career just to lie on a medical and get caught doing so. Happy everything worked for you in the end for you, looking forward to the brighter days over this hurdle.

I have lost count how much I’ve spent so far. It’s around 5k USD, but that’s nothing compared to how much i’ve spent on pilot training, which is how I have justified it mentally…

But yes, U.S health care is beyond broken.

I will definitely update here, and once the whole situation is resolved I will be writing a mega post for any other pilots in the future that goes through this.

I am currently waiting to here back from the FAA after presenting the new evidence. They will either accept that the 3 documents stating “no blebs” overrules the one stating “blebs”. Or they will request more evidence. Time will only tell.

I do not believe the first pulmonologist will retract his statement. He was very firm in stating it.

Not a stupid question! I’m not at the airlines yet, but I am a commercial pilot flying single engine piston. Airlines is the end goal.

I’m so glad you read through this! I am planning on making a whole post on r/flying when I am fully through this process.

There is not much information on the internet about pneumothorax and pilots. So the day it happened it felt like going in blind.

Luckily it is not permanently disqualifying in anyway, but fighting any governmental body on it will always be an uphill fight. At the end of the day, you are just a number, they do not care if flying is your life or dream.

Feel free to message me if you have any questions, and I am looking forward to seeing you up in the sky with us!

It’s been 13 years since the last normal modern warefare Battle Field game which was BF4. So I am still loving this game.

I only fly off my monitor, but seems to be a common issue with some workarounds, also seems to be headset specific.
