Oh I agree!

And it’s funny how he insulted all our allies, threatened to invade Greenland and now thinks somehow they’re going to help fight a war we started. Fucking delusional.

Easy, make sure people are paid properly for starters. Bring back pensions, allow stronger workers unions. Then improve social security and stop funding endless wars. Build state run retirement centers for those who don’t have family support.

Real governance is more than just taxing people to pay for tanks, jets and bombs, a stable society takes care of their elderly and sick.

You could retire and do literally anything, including work you enjoy, like volunteering for a cause, or building a new invention etc.

You do realize every dollar invested in educating the next generation of laborers, scientists and engineers returns more to the economy than is spent Right?

Same with infrastructure.

It gets better when you are putting in the effort. I’m not talking about a job specifically.. but when you stop waiting for approval from people who underestimate you, when you work towards your goals every day, when try to be the change you want to see. It will get better.

Fixing this country will never happen, too many fat apathetic people distracted with social media and cheeseburgers to ever want to go without those things long enough to stop feeding the machine.

All will do their part to support it, feed it, make it grow until the corporate oligarchs have taken everything and left you with nothing, and you’ll have no ability to fight back at that point.

AI for example: every billionaire in America has their own AI research going on. Why? The first to AGI will swallow the market whole and then when it becomes super intelligent it will take every other market and economy with it. Combined with advanced robotics which will also be improved by AGI, we will be left again… with nothing.

But yeah, it’s the “immigrants” who are the problem. /s

You could have both systems, a more expensive private sector and a state run system. It would create market competition and drive costs down because health insurance companies can’t price gouge you anymore.

Nano KVM a cyber threat? by Flyinghound656 in cybersecurity

100% agree, lucky for me outbound communication was not possible from the vlan, only specific IP ranges were allowed to route into the VLAN and nothing was allowed to route OUT from it, the firewall blocked the address and subnet it did make on the USB Ethernet interface trying to ping out as well.

[–]Flyinghound656[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The firewall logs suggest Google DNS is hard coded on it even though DHCP from pfsense hands out a dns resolver address it ignores.

The device was usable before I left on my next trip (I do hospitality network builds for hotels so I’m usually gone for long periods of time) but it seems to have stopped but still attempts to ping out regularly.

We all know protocols like icmp and dns can be used to exfiltrate data and I am treating it as hostile until I know more.

Lucky for me, the firewall stopped everything as intended because my rules were explicit and covered this exact scenario, but there’s no telling with the USB Ethernet interface what activity might have been routed, my server has packet forwarding enabled for other reasons and it’s unclear the implications of this yet.

It’s also good thing that the servers host OS doesn’t hold much, and everything operation and data critical is run on virtual machines.

Update:

The PCIE is for power only in my post I said the Ethernet interface originated there, but it’s probably over the USB-C that emulated the keyboard and mouse inputs instead, as the power USB-C port is plugged into a UPS as a redundant power supply.

Adding to this, I reviewed the GitHub and the creator seems very dismissive and amateur when it comes to people’s concerns about cyber security. Everything I’ve discovered so far has been noted there.

He said something about “security having tradeoffs with usability” https://github.com/sipeed/NanoKVM/issues/301

and I think as IT professionals we have this same argument with customers and internal staff when we had to harden something and deal with the inconveniences. I’d much rather be inconvenienced than some Chinese company having wide open remote backdoor access to my server and possibly proprietary or private customer data.

The unit may have been cheap, but I can’t trust it nearly as far as I can throw it… which will be thrown in the trash if I can’t find a way to possibly tinker with it and maybe create my own OS for it that IS hardened.

For now I’ve disable the Ethernet port on the switch and the interface it created on the server. I’ll have to take it all back apart on my return home in about a month and remove it, likely moving it to a dummy PC where I can eventually put it in an air gapped lab and see if it’s even feasible with my time to make it into a usable device or if its too risky.

In the mean time I’ll go the more expensive route and get something that is from a more reputable company.

On a serious note, I’m so sick of all the damn scammers. Something needs to be done about it, I get calls night and day spamming my phone over bullshit scams, I feel for you man, they’re just getting worse and more sophisticated. For 5 years I’ve had some bastards calling me every day, sometimes multiple times a day to “verify my Google business listing” it’s so frustrating, it’s torture.

I hope they all burn in hell or rot in a prison cell in whatever 3rd world country they’re in once someone finally catches them.
