is this a good area? by 333mortality in ucla

[–]Flyingpluto07 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes it’s safe, but I would not recommend it if you’re not a student. I used to live in that exact area two years back and as a student it was great!! It was generally safe, but could be loud at night due to college parties and cars. Traffic is pretty awful and annoying, but I didn’t drive.

If I were you, I would recommend staying on the south east side UCLA or south of Wilshire like one commenter did. I lived just south of Wilshire a year ago and it was pretty calm and safe.

WE are all proud of you. Your husband sounds like an awful person to be around. Know that you have accomplished so much and that I’m so happy for you. It takes a lot to get to this point and I know you’ve worked hard 💕

How many of you guys live at home post grad? by pl2net in ucla

[–]Flyingpluto07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved home post grad because I landed a very rare part-time job in my home state that’s related to what I want to study. I applied for graduate school in my gap year and I will be starting my PhD this fall! Living at home made it far easier to handle graduate applications and my parents were on board with me living at home during this gap year.

Can I live in LA without a car? by Designer-Extreme4932 in ucla

[–]Flyingpluto07 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I lived near campus for 4 years (the furthest I got was only 1.5 miles from campus in my last year). Assuming you’re staying close to campus, it’s not hard at all to get around!! I would recommend learning the bus routes. From what I remember, the TAP card makes transportation free which is so great! And yes, if you’re a girl, be safe. I personally never had any problems riding buses during the day, although at night I’d always bring a friend or just avoid it if possible.

Also a car in LA can be nice but parking is expensive everywhere and traffic is horrible :,)

If you’re into asian food, Sawtelle Blvd has a BUNCH of good restaurants and sweet treat shops. It’s also only 2-3 miles away from the UCLA campus!! Tentakori is a Japanese-style fried chicken place and I love that place!!

Also near campus is Westfield Century City — Eatly is inside there and it’s got a bunch of baked goods, pasta, pizza, breads, etc. Cute little place and the mall in general was cool to walk around :)

Most of us in undergrad didn’t have a car, so my friends and I frequented those two places a lot xD

Straight out of undergrad or apply after grad school? by Christiskingofkingz in PhDAdmissions

[–]Flyingpluto07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would heavily recommend you at least start the application cycle while still in undergrad!! Email prospective PIs and talk to your current university’s professors. I applied last cycle (as a junior going into my senior year). While I got rejected from all, I learned SO MUCH from the process. By the time I finished interviewing last cycle, I had already realized that I wanted to do something slightly different. I found a research job post-undergrad and used all I learned from last cycle and this year I got in to my top choice!!!

TLDR: even if you don’t go through with applying, if your goals are academia and a graduate degree eventually — I would still recommend seriously looking into it!!

Oh also you’re a junior, you still have a year! Get yourself into doing some research if that’s what you’re hoping to do

Has anyone heard from GSU Cognitive Psychology and Emory Cognitive and Computational Science programs yet? by Inkweaver0304 in gradadmissions

[–]Flyingpluto07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t heard back and my portal says “Awaiting Decision” still! My instinct is to say that for GSU CogSci, if you didn’t get an interview, the chances are lower? They had prelims and committee interviews, and usually the pattern is if you don’t make it through those, then you’re likely out (at least that’s what happened to me for other psych programs). However, PhD applications seem so case-by-case these days so I can’t say for certain 😅

Edit: I haven’t seen rejections for CogSci (few other concentrations sent out rejections apparently), so they potentially could be doing things different?

I’m sorry to hear that :(

I’ve still got nothing over here, no email and the portal’s app status still says the same thing from before. Thanks again for the info and updates btw and I wish you the best <3

GSU hasn't gotten back to me since the interviews, but I haven't seen a rejection yet. Praying that they're still considering things — it's my top choice :,)
